The Estonia ferry was sailing from Tallinn to Stockholm on the night of 28 September 1994. It was a stormy weather, the upwards-opening visor separated and the ship sank. 852 died, 757 of whom were never found. Only 137 survived.

This is a very moving and different monument. Easy to miss it's just below Old Town near Fat Margaret tower and remember there are 2 pieces about 100 meters apart. It is quite moving. Well done.

Came upon this memorial while exploring and enjoying Old Tallinn ... a reminder of the tragedy that can strike at virtually anytime and to enjoy every day. A graceful, tasteful, moving tribute to those who died in this tragic accident.

A boat at sea, a storm, a defective material and human errors, the perfect cocktail for a tragedy. The broke line is there to remind us of the 852 souls who left Tallinn, but never made it to Stockholm on a day of September 1994.

History behind it is already described in many comments, but feeling when you go there can't be described when you know what it presents. Visit itself is very short, but really if you have time to go, you should go.
