Even I live in Tallinn I don't happen to be too often in Town Hall Square. Unfortunately I couldn't visit Christmas market this year, but the Christmas tree was still there yesterday and shined lovely with it's hearts and bulbs.
It has been a market place and the centre of the City since the Middle Ages. The architecture is impressive. A lot of restaurants around and of course with summer terraces during 4-5 months.
Beer price is too high for locals, but we can always take one at the hot summer day when we need to stop after walking on narrow streets of our beautiful hometown for hours with our foreign friends.

Tallinn must be the best preserved example of a medieval city, certainly in Northern Europe, even though the Russians did consider demolishing it. The city is well preserved with some stunning architecture none more so than here in the Town Square, the heart of the city. Overseen by the famous Old Thomas weather vane who oversees and protects the city. It is nice that they have retained the cobbled streets here that embellish the effect.

It is nice just to have a wander. Make sure you visit the old Pharmacy on the corner of the square. It is amazingly well preserved inside, including the counter and ceiling.

This charming marketplace oozes local culture. There was soo much positive energy in this area. I stumbled across the oldest continuing running pharmacy, Raepteek, which is across the Town Hall Square. It is also a mini museum displaying antique medical tools.

We stayed near this place so we saw it several times and sat on a bench to enjoy the sunshine. It’s one of the most beautiful main square in Europe with the Gothic town hall and other nice historic buildings. It’s very popular for tourists and local people, there are lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. It’s a must-see attraction.

As you enter the square, I suggest you stand in a corner, take a moment and just have a proper look at the amazing architecture around. Don’t get distracted by all the shops and restaurants. This beautiful square deserves some real attention!

I was so very impressed by everything in Tallinn' Old Town. Beautiful old buildings, cobblestone streets, adorable shops. The Town Hall Square was equally lovely and surrounded by attractive (though somewhat overpriced) cafes. A little too busy with too many tourists for me to comfortable relax here, but pleasant nonetheless.

Today morning, after being in Tallinn for 4days and hatownving tried grandmas place etc, we tried the WORTHY ELK SOUP place in old town in Tallinn. We asked the girl at the counter what meat were their pies made of. To our utter surprise the response we got was " cats, dogs, snakes, wolves and rats". Shaken by the very rude answer, we asked again and got the same one with a very serious and determined face.
the tone and words meant only one thing, that we were not welcome to eat there. this left a very bitter taste in our mind after what has otherwise been a wonderful trip to Estonia.
I would expect the management to take some strong corrective steps, the time was 1400 hrs on 28th June.
Just because you give cheap food, it does not give you the right to misbehave with customers and insult their dignity.

The Town Square area is very cute. Pretty standard cobblestone old building etc. type place. But if you want a good deal on souvenirs you need to know two things.

One don't bargain. This is the European Union and the prices are fixed. You are considered offensive if you try to bargain.

Two you will pay top dollar for everything right on the Town Square. There are several shops just off Town Square especially those that you need to go downstairs or upstairs to get into who will have better pricing.

For example there is a little shop behind Town Hall that is in a former prison that you step down into from the alley. (Look for the bars). It is right next to the Photo Museum which you should also check out. This little shop has fantastic souvenirs just like all the other little shops but the prices are much better.

Enjoy Tallinn!

This is a lovely square that is the centre of the old town. It is expensive but if you like to people watch or just watch the world go by this is the place. If you want cheap eat & drink on the square there is only one place... under the tower in a place called 'Krug & Korts' Inn any drink 2 euros & the pies or Elk soup 1 euro great atmospher food & drink ..

If you go to Tallinn you can hardly miss a visit to the town hall square, I would recommend going on the train tour (a chargeable option electric train which tours the old city centre), It's a beautiful place with very historical backgrounds (apparently the oldest city in Europe?).

The only thing I would avoid is the pullers (aka the people who try to get you to go into the restaurant they work for) They are a pest and will continually try to get your business, I just kept saying NO as the prices in their restaurants are highly inflated.

Happy Traveling.
