- Tom&NikkiTravelLondon, United Kingdom1,901 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit, very impressive church and it’s free to go inside although you have to be respectful and can’t take any photos or videos inside. Head there earlier in the morning around 9am for a clear view of the church without lots of people in front of the building. The walk up to the building itself takes around 5-10 minutes from the bottom and is a slight incline up a hill and some steps, but it’s very rewarding once you are up there. Also the parliament building is opposite and there is a small park too.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 17, 2024
- R K LSeattle, Washington3,934 contributionsWhile steering totally clear of any travel to Russia, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting the historic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral from the Tsarist Russian era. Dominated by its five distinctive onion domes, the Cathedral itself was visually very striking. Its beautiful interior was absolutely stunning and provided such a contrast to most other cathedral interiors. Our visit was definitely time well spent.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2024
- Paul HBournemouth, United Kingdom1,892 contributionsI went there both in the evening and the early morning to photograph the imposing building. The latter proved the best for this purpose. In addition, we were on a walking tour in the late morning that brought me into the building too. Very impressive inside too.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024
- Marco M.Rome, Italy71 contributionsTypical Russian Orthodox cathedral. Like any Orthodox church very rich in icons and of course it is forbidden to take pictures inside. The exterior is impressive and is best noticed climbing slowly up the hill. A beautiful experienceVisited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 30, 2024
- CodyDCWashington DC, District of Columbia7,166 contributionsWhile visiting Tallinn, walked by the cathedral a few times while walking around old town. The cathedral was easy to spot when I arrived by ferry from Helsinki. Inside of the cathedral is nice as well. While taking a walking tour of old town, our tour guide provided some very interesting stories about the cathedral and its love/hate relationship with Estonia.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 30, 2024
- CristinelRomania1,406 contributionsThis Orthodox Church it’s a must see in Tallinn Old Town. An iconic piece of architecture, easy to find on the top of Toompea Hill and beautiful inside too. Free entry, sometimes could be a little bit crowded and somehow too noisy due to the tourists.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024
- kgilbert78Columbus, Ohio3,030 contributionsVery beautiful cathedral. Its a good view into Russian Orthodox buildings and icons. Amazing mosaics. We enjoyed walking around. There are very good postcards of the interior in the adjacent church shop. It gives one a good view of when Estonia was part of RussiaVisited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2024
- BluemoonCHBellinzona, Switzerland854 contributionsThis Russian Byzantine style building dominates from Toompea Hill. Very nice even inside. It was consecrated in 1900. During the USSR rule it was wanted to be transformed into a planetarium. Closed during the German occupation, it was only reopened in 1945.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 18, 2024
- Stefanie HLincoln, Nebraska1,768 contributionsThis church is one of the main attractions at the top of Toompea Hill, and it's very easy to find because of the distinctive "onion tops". You can go in for free, although donations are suggested. The interior is fairly small but beautifully decorated.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 27, 2024
- James KLeusden, The Netherlands3,351 contributionsA beautiful building and iconic for Tallinn’s Old Town. As beautiful and photogenic as the outside is, the inside is that simple. There is little pomp and circumstance and almost looks gloomy. Still, this remains Tallinn’s eye-catcher and you must have visited it when you are here.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 17, 2025

A very visible mark of the Russian presence in Tallinn. The monument is very typical of the Russian style... and is controversial for Estonians who do not want to see their city associated with this monument which reminds them of a not too happy period in their history. Estonians have experienced multiple “invaders” (Germans, Swedes, Danes, Russians) and have long been an exploited people. My guide pointed out that Estonians did not have this notion of classes because the aristocracy was almost non-existent and foreign (from Lubeck). In addition, this monument can encourage Russian territorial expansion.

This is simply beautiful both inside and out! No photos allowed inside, though, which is a shame (if understandable) as the iconography and general decoration is stunning. There was a service taking place when we visited but tourists were still allowed in, although I did feel slightly uncomfortable.

Wondrous looking church. In great weather the white decor looks amazing. The level of detail is a sight to behold. The domes dominate your view with the whole exterior very well maintained. Its location is somewhat spoilt by all the cars parked around it. It is a shame they don’t designate this car free and allow the setting to be complete.
The inside has a gift shop leading to a feast for the eyes of gold and silver and dramatic and detailed paintings and icons. The room is not massive and the main part is cordoned off but viewable. The blue parts of the ceiling you would think would be painted areas too but still look in keeping. Lovely to see outside and in.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the Orthodox cathedral of Tallinn. Its 5 onion domes and its structure, red and white, dominate the hill of Toompea. The cathedral, built in the Byzantine-Russian style between 1895 and 1900, is the seat of the Tallinn eparchy, it depends on the Estonian Orthodox church, in turn dependent on the Moscow Patriarchate. It has rich interiors.

There are 2 other churches with the same name: one in Sofia, Bulgaria and the other in Macedonia. This one in Estonia is truly gorgeous like the others. This church literally saved me from frozen feet. After visiting Tompea hill for the view, I walked around a bit then discovered this church.
The main reason I entered was to find somewhere warm, to warm-up for a few minutes, because on this hill, I couldn't find any other building opened. I was happy I did because they also sell oils, postcards, crucifixes etc., of which I was happy to purchase.
The interior is also very gorgeous and the security seems tight too..don't know why. Anyhow I highly recommend a visit to this church, it's simply beautiful.

We fortunately didn't waste a lot of time here. The rule applies inside "no shorts, no photography"...people were asked to leave and there were monitors if you even looked like you were going to take a picture. Walk around outside and then head over to the bastions with some fascinating history.

The onion shaped Russian Orthodox Cathedral does look out of place at the top of the old town amongst all the medieval towers and walls. Built around 1900 you can get to the area either long or short street - depending how energetic you are feeling .
Lovely to walk inside and admire the surroundings.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Church in Tallin, being very beautiful both inside and from outside. The mosaic and iconography work is stunning. Though no pictures are allowed inside the church, the external architecture allows for for very impressive pictures to be taken. Since it is on top of a hill within the Tallin Old Town area, the cathedral can be visited while touring the historical neighborhood.

We walked on Toompea Hill to visit the Tall Hermann tower and the Parliament and of course this nice orthodox church. It was built between 1895 –1900. It’s beautiful outside and inside. I liked the marble iconostasis, nice icons and stained glass windows. Unfortunatelly photography is prohibited inside. It’s woth a visit.

Naming a cathedral after a conquering prince in the country that your government wants to control against their will may seem provocative to anyone but the Russians. So be it. Alexander Nevsky successfully invaded and defeated Estonia in the late 13th century and his namesake bishop’s church was built between 1894 and 1900. It is widely considered to be Tallinn's grandest Orthodox site.
The exterior and interior are equally impressive in appearance, with active religious services ongoing both times that I visited. Three altars with gilded, carved wooden iconostases and four icon boxes greet visitors, although no photography is allowed inside. Even though the cathedral isn’t tourist-friendly, it does provide an important contrast to St. Mary's, its Toompea neighbor. As much as St. Mary's embodies an example of Estonian Christianity in Tallinn, this church is Russian through-and-through, without a bit of indigenous language or culture found within. A worthwhile, if brief, visit especially right after seeing its neighbor on the hill.
