About
Haapsalu, which is bordered by the sea on three sides, fits on a piece of land with a size of just 10.59 km2. The Old Town is located on a peninsula with two eskers, which continue to the north-west as a chain of islets (holms) connected to the mainland. There are low meanders between the holms – Suur and Vaike Viik. The culturally and environmentally valuable Old Town of Haapsalu can be divided into its medieval section and the 20th century health resort area. The medieval part is around the Episcopal castle, with the medieval network of Kooli, Jaani, Vee, Linda, Ruutli and Vaike-Mere Streets and buildings. It is surrounded by a belt of wooden houses and the Promenade, Aafrika beach and parks.

We had such a fantastic time in Haapsalu, it is a small town with a gorgeous old town including an old castle and fortress. it is like travelling back in time. Also the old train station is like a little shiny diamond

Haapsalu old town is my favorite place to visit in Estonia. The small old town is surrounded by the sea, very nice small streets to walk, visit some restaurants or cafe´. There were places on the sea where the ice was cleaned from snow and ice skaters enjoying themselves. The town is not busy in winter time, rather peaceful. Lots of great apartments available, some close to the old town even have sauna and zacuzzi where we relaxed.

Haapsalu is about a 90 minute drive from Tallinn, and worth doing. It's a pretty spa town by the sea, with traditional wooden buildings and a lovely promenade with views out over water. There are a selection of craft shops and galleries, cafés and restaurants. The castle, home to the Bishops of medieval times, is in good condition and is an interesting place to tour. Also worth a look is the railway station and museum; no longer connected, the magnificence of the station is down to the Russian Imperial family being regular visitors in the last century.

Couldn't even find a place to get a burger after looking all over the place. Gets 1 point for at least having a road to get me out of that damned place.
1/10 would not go again.

The beauty of Haapsalu is that it is not like "any large city". There is a quaintness, originality and its very own small town feel. Locals walking along with their shopping bags, children riding their bikes....just a very nice, quiet, safe town. It may be different in the summer; end of September we felt we were one of a handful of tourists. The streets and restaurants were quite empty, which was fine by us. You still have a lot of choices of places to go eat or shop; just no waiting times. We prefer that to massive crowds. Check out the architecture in some of the side streets too - the wooden houses are fantastic.

After sampling Tallin, we got onto the bus to take us to the baltic town of Haapsula. The town itself is pretty, with wooden houses, but very windy. Lots of coffee shops, and the one we visited, was in what looked like someones house!! Visit the old railway station, which was used by the Russian royal family, for their holidays from St. Petersburg. The station has the longest covered platform I have ever seen, to make sure none of the Russian aristocracy got wet departing the train!! The station although not in use, is used in film sets as it is so grand.

I came in mid-winter and spent a very pleasant few days ice-skating, kick-sledging, ice-swimming, eating cake and walking it off by wandering around the old town before a taking a sauna.

Next time I'm in the area, I'll bring the family.

After visiting Iion's Wonderland we strolled around Haapsalu's old town looking at the houses that so much reminded us of Astrid Lindgren's books. We were surprised Ilon Wikland was from Estonia and used to live in Haapsalu. It was rainy and cold but we still enjoyed the town. You should visit Haapsalu if you're an Astrid Lindgren fan and would like to see where the artist Ilon Wikland got some of her inspiration from.
