There is a lovely mermaid statue on the wall of the river embankment, directly across from an inviting cafe. The bridge across the river leads to the Republic of Uzupis, a self-proclaimed independent country, a fun and interesting piece of Vilnius.

I guess its the city's symbol. She's on walls, and signs and door knobs and parking meters - everywhere. Being American, I guess I'm bemused but they take it seriously...

The time you walk into this boheme area, this independent place, turn your head back and see the mermaid watching you. A small statue, sometimes hard to notice.

The mermaid statue along the river is very nice. I was surprised by it because I was not looking for it, and when I saw it, I was impressed because it seemed like I had surprised a mermaid by the river.

Not much you can really say about a statue, but it's worth taking a peek if you're in the area. It's very striking and located in an unusual place - you might not spot it right away.

The statue of this mermaid is located in the famous artists’ district in the republic of Uzupis - by the river embankment. It has become one of the key symbols of Uzupis - although not quite on the scale of the one in Copenhagen.

Expecting a myriad of arty shops and ethnic curios for sale, we were disappointed to find only 1 pottery workshop with a small display of articles for sale and a couple of other souvenir shops. Much more interesting was the market just over the river...More
