There used to be a real nice, humble egg located on the top of the pillar. It was tossed to the curb like trash by the carpetbagger ruling gentry of the Kingdom of Uzupis, luckily it was rescued and placed in the city of Vilnius. After that tragedy, a big arrogant angel was put on top of the egg's pillar. Brazenly blowing a horn, some kind of deviant symbolism of the faux artists no doubt, the angel is simply an insult to the native Uzupi. A legend fortells that someday the egg will return to it's rightful pillar with unbridled glory, smashing asunder the sensibilities of the ostentatious carpetbagger and arrogant suits.

Unfortunately, we did not visit this area until the end of our trip, and on July 12, it was downpour after downpour. Our son drove us there, and we circled the area three times, just to get a good look at this famous statue. The surrounding streets are all very narrow, and I think some of them are one way. If not one way, there is nowhere to make a U-turn as it's just too narrow. So, we went around and around. Also, I wonder how they ever find a parking spot here.

Very picturesque area with lots of cafes surrounding this central square. The bronze angel, blowing a trumpet, was placed there in 2002, so it is fairly recent. Sculpted by Romas Vilčiauskas.

Turns out the artist commissioned to create the angel was running a bit behind so on the day the sculpture should have been revealed residents woke up to find an egg on the top of the plinth. Well an egg signifies new birth and that was what they wanted for the area. The Angel was finally finished that year and has become a symbol for Vilnius, and the area of Uzupis as a whole is now very up and coming, a far cry from the rows of houses without hot water or even roofs. The egg has since been moved to the station area which is also now seeing new developments and investment.

Not worth trekking over to Uzupis just to see this but go further through this quirky area of Vilnius and find some great art and places to eat.

Uzupis is a remarkable area of Vilnius - they describe it as the montmatre of Vilnius but perhaps it is better identified as a unique location in its own right. Galleries, quirky artistic humour, sculptures, cafes and technology wrapped up into one remarkable, compact area - I just wish I had had longer to explore.

If you are visiting Vilnius then make sure you visit the "bohemian" quarter called Uzupis or as the locals call it The Republic of Uzupis. A fomer run down area it is now colonised by artists and those with aspirations........in fact I have heard it referred to as a place for "yuppies" But do go to see the Uzupis Angel and watch all the wedding groups come to have their photographs taken, there is a nice little bar at the side of the Angel with very good beer. Visit the bridge across the river adorned with locks placed there by newly married couples but most of all go to see the Uzupis Constitution on the wall at the side of the bar (now in several languages). No 12 on the constitution list is "a dog has the right to be a dog"..........and some of the others are even more hilarious. Every year they have an independence day in Uzupis when visitors are expected to show their passport to get in....................It is a wonderful little area and should not be missed.

This angel is the symbol of Užupis and has been standing since 2002. It is set upon a tall pillar and represents the independent Užupis has away from Vilnius city.
