- Sergey KMoscow, Russia47,554 contributionsIn ancient times, Vilna was surrounded by a stone fortress wall. Below the Subocz Gate, in the first half of the 17th century, a barbican was built, which has survived to this day, called the Bastion. The bastion consisted of four elements: a tower, a wall with a terrace, a casemate and a tunnel. It was built to take advantage of a natural fortification - a forty-meter-high hill on the banks of the Vilna River. The bastion had a horseshoe shape, protruding outward beyond the line of the city wall north of the Dog Gate. The thickness of the brick walls at the base was three and a half meters, at the top - about one and a half meters. Large boulders were built into the base of the walls. On the inside, the bastion was covered by a brick wall eight meters high, and on the flanks it was protected by two curtains. The walls were encircled and served as their outer defensive line by a ditch, which, if necessary, could be filled with water from the river. The Bastion was only claimed once. During the Russian-Polish War of 1654-1667, when the Russian army approached Vilna, the commander of the Polish-Lithuanian army, Hetman J. Radziwill, decided to leave the city fortifications without a battle due to the unsatisfactory condition of the walls and towers. Russian troops entered the capital of Lithuania in an organized manner through four gates. A short battle with the retreating enemy rearguard occurred only at the crossing of the Viliya River at the Green Bridge, after which the hetman's divisions retreated to Zhmud. “This is how Lithuanian Carthage, Krakow’s rival, was captured,” wrote a 17th-century Polish historian. The impregnable Artillery Bastion was surrendered without a fight.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten April 15, 2024
- VAT0613Lyon, France494 contributionsThe bastion is a beautiful monument, very well appointed outdoors and indoors, it can be easily visited. Today it is an interesting cultural place to do with children. The activity takes 20 to 30min The park around is just as interestingVisited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 18, 2024
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom947 contributionsThe bastion itself is now nestled in between houses and business and looks a little out of place. The bastion is interesting with some old cannons on top. The real delights are inside. You walk down a slope into the cellars of the bastion. Inside is a load of items that have been dug up here that cover a massive stretch of history. Very interesting.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2024

It is basically a not too extensive museum located in what was one of the old defense bastions of the city. Inside there are ancient weapons (some you can even touch and use for photos) and some other objects on display. Part of the tour is going outside where you have high views of the city (although not the highest or the most beautiful). I'm not entirely sure if I would pay to get in again, but it's okay. The bastion itself looks as if it’s ‘sunk’ in what might have once been a moat. The upper edge of the ‘moat’ has a nice trail, with benches. One can sit and relax and enjoy looking at the bastion and defensive wall. Good place to catch a sunset.
As an aside, the official name of this attraction is Bastion of the Defensive Wall, which is far better known than TA’s Artillery Bastion.

This very nice restored impressing artillery fortress is strategically placed on a hill with a good view over the surrounding areas. Sorry to say it was closed when we visited it, but we got a good view from the outside. It was primarily built for some hundred years ago to defend Vilnius from the Swedish army’s and from the Russian army’s attacks. I looking forward to see how it looks inside, but we had a fantastic view from the hill.

I was glad to see this attraction, NOT another church. Our Tour Guide explained about these fortications and the related museum we could visit after our tour.
I imagined how the city would look like with it. Situated in a hilly area, it must be the best location to have these fortications.

The artillery bastion is located in the heart of Old Town Vilnius. The entrance fee for students is 2 EUR.
The ground floor level with various historical information, the upper level with the panoramic view across Vilnius as well as the basement level deep inside the bastion can be explored.
There are numerous antiques and artefacts on display throughout the exhibition.
If you've got some time to kill, swing by!

The Bastion of the Defensive wall is a military fortification. The attraction consists of the museum and a viewing platform.I enjoyed this tourist attraction. The bastion sits on top of a hill and offers you a fine vista of the surrounding area.Great opportunity for picture taking of the view and the medieval type backdrop of the Bastion. It feels like you are in a mini castle.
The museum itself is located in the underground area of the attraction.Down in this area you will find canons, battle boards, videos and to be honest an overly long section based on footwear in this era.

On the eastern edge of Vilnius Old Town you find the huge curved wall of a 17th C bastion. Surrounded by an earthen moat it was built to defend against attacks by Swedes and Russians. Today it is surrounded by parks and footpaths and is a favourite place for the young of Vilnius to hang out. You can pay to visit the museum inside of just admire the walls.

In this museum you'll find more about the city walls and the history behind them. Also you will have a nice view of the city when you go outside. In the basement of the bastion there usually are some interesting exhibitions.

The Bastion was built in the 16 ct for protecting Vilnius from attacks from the East. Now nicely restored. Not so big exhibition inside : cannons, weapons, ammunition, some recent archaeological discoveries. Audio guide 3 euro, ticket 4 euro. Nice views from the terrasse to the Old town, Gediminas Castle and Three Crosses, but you can get almost the same views for free going around the Bastion on the hill path from Subaciaus street to Uzupis.
