Fascinating history of Vilnius and the defence of the town. Excellent display of artifacts, weapons and armour. Superb views from the top floor with the whole of Vilnius spread out below. Especially lovely as dusk arrives and the city lights up. Hard climb on cobbles...More

Difficult to find entrance, it's by the river! Walk up cobbled stone pathway, but worth walking up the stairs for the view from the top of the tower too. Small entrance fee.

This is one of the most characteristic points of Lithuanian capital and you can see the tower literally from every part of the city. The first brick tower was built in 15th century however the tower you can visit these days it is a reconstruction...More

It worth visiting this place together with the Hill of Three Crosses as they are separated very close. IMO, the tower gives you almost the same view as the hill on which it is situated, so there is no sense to pay for entrance

A good walk up the hill and great views from the top of the tower. Renovations were in progress when we were there (but not in the tower itself) so it can only improve.

Despite the difficulty to find the path to go up because of the maintenance works on the main one, the Gediminas Tower is a must see in Vilnius. A nice view on the city is a plus.

I had to try to get at the top, but watch out, it is a steep climb and it is an old road, so it is not too easy. But the view makes it certainly worth.

The Gediminas Tower is a medieval tower but was destroyed during the Russian occupation of 1655-61. The tower was reconstructed in 1933 by the Polish government that ruled Vilnius between the two World Wars. The tower is a national symbol today. There is a modest...More

Had a little time to myself one afternoon and decided to check out Gediminas Tower as it sits predominately downtown with killer views. After hiking up the steep hill via the stony road in the blowing cold rain I was ready for some Lithuanian history!...More

It's correct that this isn't an easy place to access, you need sturdy boots and the ability to negotiate some very wonky cobblestones but once you've made it to the top it's worth it! There is a funiculaire but it wasn't working when we were...More

Panoramic Views - Three Crosses or Gediminas Tower? (2 Replies)
If I want to get great panoramic views of the Old Town and the newer part of the city, do you recommend that I visit Three Crosses or Gediminas Tower?

why not both? I think for newer part - Gediminas tower, old town is equally beautiful from both. you can also consider climbing to the bell tower of sv. Jonu church. It is the highest building in old town, situated in the very heart of it and, as for me, it has the most beautiful view.

Hill of Crosses is not in Vilnius, but Hill of 3 Crosses is near to Gediminas' Tower. Think this way: Old Town is a historical district where you can see Gediminas Tower (a tower of the Upper Castle), Hill of 3 Crosses, The Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Nicholas Church. They all are scattered and can be seen by walking across the Old Town, say, from the Gate of Dawn to Cathedral (both at opposite ends). Some 15 minutes by foot in normal pace. St Nicolas Church is a bit away, add some 5...More

Gediminas Tower (1 Replies)
I'll be visiting Vilnius from 22nd to the 25th February and I understand that the Gediminas Tower is currently closed for repairs. I was wondering if anyone had heard whether the tower will have re-opened by then? Also, does anyone know if the funicular railway to the tower is also closed?

Gediminas Tower and all the Hill are totally closed for access. The funicular stopped operating even before the Hill closure. I have not heard of any plans to reopen the Hill and Tower soon. Other points at the moment for views over the Old town are the Hill of Three crosses and Bell Tower near the Cathedral, I like the latter one.
