A slick, professionally organised and action-packed itinerary. Alina welcomes you with her positive pre-departure emails. Upon arrival in Lithuania, be prepared for daily fun-filled adventures. My adventures were enhanced by my good-humoured local guide, Paulius. He comes across as a modern renaissance man, well-versed on a range of topics, and has a helpful, upbeat personality.
Particular highlights included: a homestead dinner and stay with hospitable locals in Rusnė (the journey there included being towed across a flooded road by a tractor - a wonderful, authentic local experience), visiting Ignalina nuclear power plant and Visaginas (after clearing security and donning protective gear we visited the reactor room, control room, the turbines hangar, had a canteen lunch and then did a guided tour of the information centre), the scenic drive to the Curonian Spit, Nida beach and various museums such as Palanga's Amber museum and Rumšiškės ethnographic museum. Local guides in Klaipėda, Kaunas, Ignalina nuclear power plant, Rumšiškės, Vilnius and Trakai offer insightful explanations to gain a deeper, holistic appreciation of Lithuania's multi-faceted past, present and future aspirations.
Practical tip: bring your own kettle for the hotels if you'd like to make your own tea/coffee/hot drinks; as is typical in many continental European hotels, kettles are not always provided in rooms.
A wonderful itinerary - highly recommended! You'll leave with fond memories of Lithuania's people, cuisine and scenic landscapes.
