Excellent gallery for art lovers, one will be pleasantly surprised with the permanent exhibition of Pranas Domsaitis works. Domsaitis was born in Lithuania Minor in 1880 and was well known in Germany after WW1 and in South Africa after WW2. More than 600 Domsaitis artworks were donated to the gallery of which around 300 are on the permanent display. The gallery building is very nice. There are several permanent exhibitions of other Lithuanian emigrants well worth exploring beside Domsaitis art works :Vytautas Kasuba sculptures and marine painter Janusas. Also very interesting is the exhibition of miniature arts from 16-20 centuries.
A big exhibition of East Prussia painters from a private collection is on display until May 2018.
Gallery is in an easy walkable distance (some 10-15 mins) from the Old town and after visiting it one can go to the Sculpture park (just around the corner) for a change.
Gallery is closed on Mondays and National holidays, the other days open 12-18, Sundays 12-17. Ticket is only 1,80 euro and audioguide in English/German free of charge, giving extra information to some of the most important exhibits of the museum.
Plan at least 2 hours to get the most of the gallery. It is a real gem for art lovers in Klaipeda, highly recommended.

I need to update this entry - the Pranas Domsaitis Gallery is at this address: Liepu Str. 33, LT-92145, KlaipÄ—da, Lithuania and not in Kaunas at all!
Domsaitis was born and brought up in Klaipeda so that city is the home of his gallery. It is a fascinating exhibit, with a considerable amount of his work not only from his time in Lithuania on display but also from when he lived in South Africa.
Displayed items vary from sketches of the artists' parents through to large sculptures of contorted human bodies. A fascinating and underrated artist.

A spacious and expertly curated gallery that allows the visitor really to enjoy and understand the art of one of Lithuania’s most famous painters (as well as provides other temporary exhibitions by other artists). I really enjoyed my 1 hour visit here, and the gallery guide was particularly helpful and charming in answering — in fluent English — the questions I had about Domšaitis

What a wonderful museum for those interested in Lithuanian art. The building itself is very interesting, but it has a wonderful collection of the works of Domsaitis as well as other special exhibitions. This is truly a little gem and an opportunity to see works not present in many major art museums of the world.
