We took a daytrip to Zemaitija region. Janis is an excellent guide and canoe instructor and took good care of us and our 2 children. The wooden canoes were expertly made. We enjoyed the calm lake and unspoiled nature of the national park.

Our family traveled through Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic Countries this summer. We toured the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, hiked Pulpit Rock in Norway and soaked in authentic saunas in Tallinn and Riga. But I can safely say that our canoe trip with Janis through the Trakai National Historic Park was one of our very favorite experiences of them all. My wife contacted Janis after searching the Internet for activities in and around Vilnius. She found many large tour activities, but she knew that she had hit gold when she ran across Janis and Wet Weim. Janis made planning our trip easy, and we couldn’t wait to hit the water!

We stayed in Vilnius while in Lithuania, so we had to take the train out to Trakai, an easy thirty-minute trip. Janis was waiting at the station when we arrived. Two beautiful, handmade cedar canoes were on a rack behind his comfortable, modern van. We piled in and headed for the put-in. We unpacked the van and put the two canoes in the water. My wife and I and our four-year-old son took the three-seater while Janis and our six-year-old daughter were in the two-seater. Janis had all of the necessary safety equipment, and he made sure that we felt comfortable maneuvering the canoe. Our plan was to put in, head over to the Trakai Castle, cross the lake to another historic home, and then head down to a quiet end of the lake where we would stop on a tiny island for a picnic of Lithuanian delicacies. Janis had procured fishing licenses for us and rigged up two rods with lures. We were going to stop and fish and even troll along the way. Yes, it sounds awesome. And yes, it was!

Canoeing past the castle was spectacular. The large majority of the visitors are on land, so our view from the water was both privileged and calm. We drifted in a little cove while Janis told us about the castle and answered all of our questions, even explaining how many of the original castle stones made it into the foundations of nearby homes! We crossed the lake in heavy wind, but Janis chose angles and approaches that made the trip manageable for my wife and me.

The next special moment was our picnic on the little island. We pulled up on shore and stretched our legs. I began casting from shore and my wife pulled the lifejackets off of the children. Before we knew what had happened, Janis had a table and five chairs set up, and a feast was being put together. Janis had brought Lithuanian Dziugas cheese, baguette with tuna pâté, mixed nuts, dried fruits, beautifully ripe peaches, and a couple small bottles of white wine. It was almost surreal to be on a tiny island in the middle of an immense lake, surrounded by forest, drinking wine and enjoying the tastiest hard cheese I’d ever had. We enjoyed so much visiting with Janis—who spoke excellent English—and won’t soon forget our conversations about Lithuanian politics, geography, cuisine, education, and ecology. The meal ended with a box of local chocolates and freshly brewed coffee. Yes, freshly brewed coffee! After two glasses of wine and two cups of coffee, my paddling powers were refreshed, and we set off to continue our journey.

We paddled a bit longer to different fishing spots. There was a light rain, but nothing that even required putting on a jacket. My wife and I enjoyed our time together, and our daughter loved talking Janis. He made her time very special. We eventually made our way back to Trakai Castle around 9:00 pm, where to our surprise we found six hot air balloons in the air. We drifted along, watching the balloons over the castle, and Janis took out his drone and captured amazing photos: our canoes with the castle in the background, balloons over our heads, balloons over the castle, our children smiling with shimmering water behind them.

We were planning on catching the last train back to Vilnius, but we didn’t make it off of the water in time. No worries, said Janis, he would happily drive us back to our apartment. Janis dropped us off at our front door after 10:00, and we said our goodbyes. The trip had been amazing. Janis was easy to work with when planning our trip. He was a conscientious and kind guide to my family and me. He put together one of the more memorable meals from our summer travels. And he helped make Lithuania our favorite country of the trip.

Nice tour, but too short. Our guide was really kind but the tour was only 1 hour long not 2 hours as it was in the tour description.

Thank you for your feedback. Frankly speaking, 4 stars hurt's, but it is as it is. Or tour length is calculated approximately (stated in description) and varies on various factors, wind speed and direction, stream, size of the group and individual paddling skills. Since you were only ones in the group and given perfect weather conditions, we paddled the distance faster than average. Our priority is quality, not the quantity. I really hope you enjoyed this hour in our small town.

We did this tour with my wife. We were looking for something special and this tour absolutely met our expectations! Here are the reasons why:

- canoes themselves are really impressive - good looking, comfortable and handy crafted
- your guide Janis, who also makes canoes, is a nice person, speaking English, Lithuanian and Russian.
- safety briefing before the tour makes feel comfortable
- picnic on the coast gives an opportunity to enjoy vies with a cup of freshly made coffee or tea
- did not need to make photos yourself. just 4 days later we received a set of photos made by Janis, looking really professional! great memories)

Also, this trip is a great reason to visit the town of Pervalka - a cozy village, where the tour stars from. Consider walking around a have a lunch after the tour!

Moreover – do not doubt and take your dog with you if you have one! Next time we will)

The idea that we look upon the dunes from the sea level occured to us rather late - less than two days before we had the only chance to actually make the tour. However, the guide, Janis, replied promptly and took us on such a short notice. The service was perfect, from picking up at the accommodation site on our request to instructions on how to paddle and use the canoe on the shore already. As we were total beginners, I think I appreciated the most his patience with explaining everything and his calmness on the water, when we of course had the learning curve to master the paddling. If you fear that you might fall out of the canoe - we did just that. No worries, the water is shallow, and, what was best, the fall was accompanied with laughter and good spirit by all, from Janis as well, even though that gave him extra work. I had never gotten the feeling of impatience from him.
The tour itself is alot of fun, you need to work as a team on the canoe and after a while you really get the grip on the whole paddling thing. Photos are made by the guide, which is perfect, you do not have to worry about a thing, and the photos look far better, made from distance and with the drone at the dune.
The small lunch at the lonely beach was great fun, with great coffee and snacks, we enjoyed the chatting and just chilling at the beach before returning with the canoe to the shore.
The tour took a little over 6 hours and it was really all you could ask for from such a lovely day at the seaside. Janis is a wonderful guide, that gives you all the information you need even before the tour (don't forget the sunscreen and change of clothes, wear flipflops) and on the tour is a fun and patient tutor and companion. I would totally recommend the tour, to get to see Curonian spit from another angle.

We went on the river excursion with Janis as a larger group of several canoes. From the start I could tell this is well branded and professional company. The canoe transport system looks super stylish. The canoes are stunning and glossy, as well as comfortable. After a brief explanation of canoeing and safety principles we got onto the water. I had the pleasure of being a mate on the canoe with Janis. We enjoyed the sightseeing and chatting as well as good amount of paddling. We took a nice break on land and were refreshed by fresh coffee and cookies. Wwe also found amazing creations of prolific beaver. After getting back on the river, we saw kingfisher fly by several times. By the end of this, I was pretty frozen as I did not wear sufficient layers. But the lovely trip and cordial conversation kept my heart warm, hehe. And did I mention the beautiful canoes? We recommend this service to others. I can imagine in the summer and fall it will be lovely out there. I hope to return one day and do this again.

My boyfriend and I visited Klaipeda for a few days, and started our trip with this Dange Legends tour. Communication before the trip was short, precise and professional. We got picked up at our hotel by Janis and was driven to our start point. Janis was very kind, had a lot of information about the city and we felt safe with his instructions about the kano. (beautiful piece of handcrafted art)
We would definitely reccomand this trip.
