You can have a great view on this bridge by going up the hill or taking the funicular. You will also have a nice city view and also a great time.

This bridge is an example of the drab depressing Soviet architecture. It was reconstructed in 2005 and much of the Soviet charm has been removed. It looks better at night than during the day. I would suggest seeing it on a lovely warm summer evening.

The bridge is now long since stripped of its soviet decorations, and is just an ordinary bridge. Some of the original decorations are however on display at the outstanding Grutas Parsk outdoor museum. Which is highly recommended if you are in that part of the country anyway

In the 19th century, the St. Petersburg – Warsaw highway was built through Kovno. The banks of the Neman were connected by a pontoon bridge. He connected Kovno of the Kovno province of the Russian Empire on the right bank with Aleksotas of the Suwalki province of the Kingdom of Poland - on the left bank. During the flood of 1913, part of the bridge was destroyed. When the Germans captured Kovno, they built a wooden bridge, calling it Hohenzollernbrücke. In the first period of Lithuanian independence between the wars, a metal drawbridge was built and called Aleksotassky. It was blown up during the retreat of part of the Red Army in June 1941. The Germans restored the bridge and blew it up during their retreat from the city. The current metal bridge with reinforced concrete pylons lined with granite was built on old pillars after the war by German prisoners of war and Soviet troops. In modern times, after restoration, Soviet symbols were removed from the bridge and named after the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas.

I have read that this bridge had some historical signs, now removed. Too bad, from my point of view. Anyway, we crossed it on foot and the view of the town from its central point is nice. Worth it. Much traffic.

It's just a bridge and there's really no reason to visit it unless you need to cross it... There's really nothing to see at the other edge as the funicular to the top of the hill is closed for renovation. If you vant to see the old town, stay at the south end and if you want to see suburbs (actually quite interesting), pass the bridge and venture into areas not recommended during night...

There is nothing exceptional about this bridge or it's history that couldn't be said about almost every pre-war bridge in Europe, it was built, the Nazi's blew it up during the war, it was re-built, not much more to say about it really.

Original bridge was destroyed in the WWII and new built 1948 in quite typical Soviet style. In my opinion there is nothing special to see in this bridge, but connects Kaunas old town to Aleksoto on the other bank. On the Aleksoto side you can take Aleksotas Funicular (Aleksoto funikulierius). Traffic is very busy so use the subway passages. If you are coming from Via Baltica from south and traveling to Kaunas, most likely your navigator takes you over this bridge.
