Beautiful historical castle set in a beautiful town. Well worth a day trip to experience both castle and town. Great photo opportunities. No need for a tour guide as many signs were multilingual.

This is a must if you visit Trencin; the tours are in Slovak, but you can read about the castle and then see many interesting parts on your own. It is a bit of a walk uphill, but the views are spectacular once you reach the castle. Be sure to take the narrow steps up a tower too.

Visited Trencin and this castle on a day trip from Bratislava. The castle does look very pretty from far off as it sits on a hill overlooking Trencin and there's a big climb up to the entrance of the castle.
The castles does offer a guided tour, which unfortunately is in Slovak only. The former barracks of the castle has exhibitions, but most of it is in Slovak, so difficult for me to follow. The rest of the castle is in reasonable condition and there's great views, especially from Mathias Tower. Along the climb up to the latter are lots of mini exhibitions of Trenchin history.
I enjoyed the visit, but the lack of English was a problem.

You can buy 2 types of tours here - short and a long one. We entered with the short tour which inlcudes a visit to the tower. It has an amazing view and even if the binoculars seem to be payed, they are free. The long tour is prolonged by other venues of the castle. I would suggest visiting the long tour. The castle has a very interesting history and the guides are fond of all the historical details.

Today was our first venture out of Bratislava in over 2 months. We decided to visit the 3rd largest castle in Slovakia. The Trencin Castle is a large complex full of fortifications, with 5 gates to pass before you reach the upper palace. First stones date back to the 9th century with a pre-Romanesque rotunda. It was a highly functional castle and would even protect the habitants, who would flock to the lower castle during foreign attacks. The castle is full of history with sieges, sacking, Royalty ownership, extensive destruction and rebuiling, and lots of medieval torture in the dungeon called “The Devil’s Tower”.
The castle is now owned by the city of Trencin and has been undergoing renovation since 1955.
Slovakia is a beautiful country with lots of hidden treasures.

There seems to be a wonderful castle in every village, hamlet or settlement here but so many are amazing examples & Trencin is no different.
Different to Bojnice but no less spectacular, the entrance fee (around €5.00) is extremely reasonable.
There are tours but only in Slovak, so we wandered around by ourselves quite happily.
If you like incredible views & historical sites, look no further. This place will flick your switch!

The castle at Trencin dominates the city. The little old town and square plus the castle make it a lovely stop for a few hours. It should be a “must see” in Slovakia. It is just about 1.5 hours from Bratislava by frequent train service (for 6 Euros).

Great for a day trip or stop off for a break when traveling east to west or east to west of Slovakia. Great views from the castle. Steep but easy walk up from parking near the high street. Great hot chocolate in the square, cakes too.
