The oldest Marathon in Europe is represented by the statue of the runner known as the 'Victory Herald' which was built in 1960 and has since become the symbol of the historic race. Every winner of the Kosice Peace Marathon is inscribed on to the statue.

Known as the peace marathon this statue has the names of the winners inscribed on the plinth. Apparently the weekend of the actual marathon is a great weekend to be here.

This statue is located on the outskirts of the city. As a marathon runner myself I wanted to see it as the names of all the Kosice marathon winners are engraved on a wall adjacent to the monument. Its a good statue, shame its not in a more prominent location.

This is a great weekend of the marathon that is one of the oldest in Europe. The town is buzzing and the night before has special displays and free entry to some of the museums.

Every time I get excited about seeing something related to running marathons, my friends like to remind me that the guy who ran the original marathon died. Nevertheless, it was neat to see this. More than the names of the winners listed for each year of the race, I loved seeing the countries from which each runner came. A wide variety of nationalities are represented.

This humble statue gave its name to the square it's on - The Peace Marathon Square. The statue depicts Pheidippides, the original runner from Marathon to Athens with news of peace. Kosice has a long-standing tradition of marathon and it's nice to have a look at the statue on your way to or from East Slovak Museum as all of the winners from past marathons are inscribed on the stones around it, along with year in which they have won - men and women. The fire only burns on day of the marathon though.

In the year 2014, the Košice Marathon celebrated its 90th aniversary and because of this it is the oldest Marathon helded in European Continent. The event itself was great and have been taken by the Slovakian state television (Rozhlas a Televízia Slovenska) for the first time this year.
