About
Located a few miles west of Bratislava. Devín Castle ranks among the most important archeological sites in Central Europe. Located at the banks of the Danube, where once the Danube and Amber Roads intersected, it watches over the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. Archeological research proves the area was settled about 7000 years ago and has since then been populated by one group or another, almost without interruption until today. Already during prehistory, it was a fortified center of power. During the Roman period the first several brick buildings were erected here. The first written source on Devín dates back to 864 and mentions a “Dowina Castle”. The Great Moravian period saw the erection of a church with colorful interior wall painting on castle grounds. Throughout the Middle Ages the Castle was an important border fortress, often passing from one noble family to another. In 1809 the Castle was intentionally demolished using explosives. In 1961 Devín Castle was declare

- MN_WalkersMinneapolis, Minnesota618 contributionsA ruin but an impressive oneAlthough the castle is a ruin - having been blown up by Napoleon’s army - it is a spectacular place to visit. It overlooks the Danube River and the Austrian border; the Iron Curtain ran just below the castle along the river’s edge. The is a monument at the base of the castle to those killed trying to escape from Czechoslovakia to Austria. There is a lot of climbing involved in visiting - both along an inclined path and up steps. There are two small museums or exhibit spaces, a WC and multiple benches to sit and rest. A cafe and beer garden is just outside the entrance. The views from the top are wonderful. We spent about an hour and a half there.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 15, 2023
- claudea239Toronto, Canada142 contributionsBeautiful historical centre but small. The city historic centre is beautiful but small. We stayed 4 days but started running out of things to do by the end of the third day. We made a day trip to the Devin Castle ruins (only 30 minutes away by local bus). It is worth a visit. The site is very well organized and documented. We stayed at Hotel Roset. Highly recommended. The suites are large and some have kitchens. The breakfast is excellent and staff very helpful.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2023
- Ilovemyjollies433 contributionsGreat viewsWe really enjoyed our visit here. We came mid October via bus* from Bratislava (info at end of review on how to get there). Arrived at opening time (10am) and it was quiet which meant we got lots of people free pics . There is the basic walk or the extra walk which takes a further 20 minutes and dotted around there were information areas inside parts of the castle that remained. The views were wonderful. All in all a really nice morning. It took around 1 on the basic walkand cost 8 euro with concessions available. * If you want to go by bus, take the number 29 at Novy Most bus stop. Its on the main road that crosses under the UFO bridge on the castle side. Its the bus going to Opletolova VW5. Buses go every half hour and take around 20 minutes. Get off at Hrad Devin. On the return journey its the bus headed for Mala Scana. You can scan your debit card when you get on the bus to pay (euro 1.10) or get a ticket from the machine at the bus terminus just behind the bus stop. If you get a ticket make sure you validate it when getting on th bus.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 21, 2023
- Catriona MUnited Kingdom77 contributionsBeautiful place!I absolutely loved my recent trip to Devin castle. Took a bus from Bratislava centre to get there and was very easy. About 30 mins then 10 min walk from bus stop. I would definitely recommend getting here early. I got here before opening to wander around the grounds before the castle entry opened. Because I went early it was quite quiet and nice to take in the views before everyone came and started taking each other posing photos haha. The ruins and grounds are definitely worth a visit and such cheap entry. The little bar at the bottom of the castle grounds is great for a little drink also. Such friendly staff and great for a beer after my walk!Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 13, 2023
- MeganSan Francisco, California91 contributionsArguably the best thing to do in BratislavaBratislava was my 5th stop on a trip, and this was my favorite part of coming to the city. It is definitely worth a trip—it took me about 2 hours, and I took my time walking through the whole thing and just sitting and enjoying the views. It is so beautiful and so peaceful, definitely take the time to get out there. No need for a car, I took a Bolt taxi for only about $7-10 from the city center for 20 minutes each way. Totally worth it!Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 20, 2023
- Alex GMaribor, Slovenia80 contributionsInteresting old fortressA nice old fortress with a lot of history. Two museum rooms were closed - i think because we were there in late December? But its still something to see and to remember. You get also a nice, interactive map. The entrance is with the “Bratislava card” free.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 27, 2023
- tushar_paiMilton Keynes, United Kingdom4,085 contributionsFascinating historyWe took a Bolt taxi from the centre and it took just 20 mins and less than €10 to get there. The castle is in ruins but is set on a mountain top at the confluence of Danube and Morava rivers. On the other side is Austria and so this castle is quite literally on the border. The extended circuit takes you round the castle and leads to up the middle castle and upper castle. There are about 150 steps leading up to the upper castle from where you can see the rivers and into Austria. There is this really deep well in the middle castle which you can look into. We spent more than an hour over here wandering around the ruins and then took a taxi back.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 25, 2024
- CharlieReading, United Kingdom23 contributionsA superb trip.A really great trip with breathtaking views. Take the 29 bus which gets you there in 25 minutes. As mentioned the views are the best thing about visiting, although the history is very interesting. In the car park area there is a good restaurant/bar perfect for a refreshing beer afterwards!Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 9, 2024
- tim4022018Market Harborough, United Kingdom80 contributionsHalf day excursion from BratislavaWorth the bus trip out from the centre of Bratislava (only 25 mins on bus no. 27). Impressive castle on the confluence of the river. Interesting exhibition on the Iron curtain years. Well labelled exhibits in Slovak, English and German. Several cafes near the entrance to the castle. Entrance fee 8 euros for adults (concessions available).Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 2, 2024
- meghangwIncheon, South Korea251 contributionsFantastic adventureThis was one of my favorite outings in my two weeks in Eastern Europe. It was easy to get to from Bratislava- a nice little bus ride. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for it too. A short walk to the castle grounds then a nice walk up! Not for those with mobility issues.. it’s a bit of a steep climb and stairs on the castle itself. Amazing views 360° around and carefully restored history. Lots of little corners to explore and we even found a little coffee truck for a quick recharge. The exhibits inside were really interesting especially the one about the iron curtain. I learned so much! You can take the extended pathway back down for a nice stroll through the trees. At the bottom there are few nice spots to have a beverage and a snack too. There was a bit of road construction when we were there but it didn’t hinder our bus ride back.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 7, 2024

We took a 90 minute cruise from Bratislava and as there were a lot of school children on our ship all heading to the castle we turned the opposite way and enjoyed a refreshing local beer in a small nearby establishment.
Along the route to the castle there are some interesting monuments to the hundreds of Slovakians who lost their lives trying to cross from the east to the west as the castle site sits adjacent to the Austrian border.
At the foot of the castle there are a few restaurants, souvenir stands and a booth selling local wine by the glass or bottle.
Entrance to the castle and grounds is €6 and well worth the small charge. There is quite a walk to the castle up a steep winding path. There is small Museum with various artifacts and once at the top the castle offers amazing vistas of the surrounding area, including the river Danube and the Austrian border.
We decided that the two hours that the boat company offers were not enough to fully enjoy the castle and surrounding areas and decided to take the regular bus back to the city.

I didn’t enjoy this visit as much as I thought I would.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon, after getting a bus for about 20 minutes from the city we walked to the ticket booth and were shouted at by the ticket lady that cards were not accepted (even though they had a VISA sticker on the window and not in English) it was cash only. It wasn’t expensive €6 for the two of us but I felt this should been a free attraction. The view was nice but wasn’t worth the trip/hike to get here.
On leaving we noted that the last entrance closes at 3.30pm and there was a very disappointed family that could get in outside the gates - I felt completed to tell them that they didn’t miss much!!

20 minute bus ride from the city center which is very convenient but honestly a little overrated for the 6 euro admission price. Was surprisingly busy for a Thursday morning and of all the castles/ruins I've been to in Slovakia and Europe this was nothing exceptional considering most ruins are free to walk around. Would reccomend if you want to get out of the city and don't mind spending the money.

Bratislava has many, many wonderful things to recommend it and this building is one of them. We got a taxi up there as we were out of town and it made sense to get to the highest point without having to walk in the heat.
Allow a couple of hours of these just wander around the inside and the beautiful gardens around the history is astonishing and it is worthwhile getting some kind of guide either hired or an app for your phone. You will take plenty of pictures here as it is so beautiful.
Fantastic views of a fantastic city so definitely worth a visit.

when I think of a castle, this is what I think of. This is not a reconstructed castle that looks like a modern building. This is a full-on, medieval castle in its Glory. I visited in freezing January, so large parts of the castle were closed.I would have liked to see the upper Castle, but I did get my fill with what was open.
tickets are very inexpensive, and the woman at the ticket booth spoke perfect English. Unfortunately I had not a lick of cash, but they do take credit cards.

We can reach Devin Castle by public transportation just 30 minutes from the city centre. If you visit Bratislava, you have to visit this place too. Great view from here, you will not regret it. I would like to spend more time in this place but unfortunately, I only had a one day tour from Vienna. If you have more days in Bratislava, you can spend one day here and explore surrounding this castle.

A friend showed us this great place, which is overlooking the Danube river. Just splendid.
There is a small museum up the castle stairs showing some items which were found around the castle from different times of history.
If you want to become a hobby knight, check out your skills. The guys are lovely and it’s fun.

Magnificent place absolutely worth visiting. From the city center you can take bus 29 and get off after 10km at the Štrbská stop. Once you get off you will find the castle 500 meters away. The castle is located on the bank of the Danube and in particular where the Morava river joins it. The landscape is spectacular and absolutely worth a visit.

Wondering what kind of footwear is best for visiting Hrad Devin?
Written November 24, 2023
A good pair of walking shoes or tennis shoes should be fine. Lots of walking uphill so comfortable with a sturdy sole should work well.
