This well-known square boasts the biggest fountain known as the Družba Fountain in Bratislava. The square was renamed in 1989 to Námestie Slobody. One piece of history worth remembering, and mentioning is the world’s first helicopter took off from here in 1897. The core of this stainless-steel artwork is the linden flower which is a symbol of Slavs. The flower itself is 29 feet in diameter and is the center of the circle which is 147 feet in diameter. The square is today surrounded on all sides by important buildings. There are the Slovak Technical University, the Ministry of Transport, Posts and Telecommunications of the Slovak Republic.

At the heart of the Freedom Square is a huge metal linden flower said to be the symbol of the Slavs.
There are official buildings that surround the square. There is a cafe and bistro at one side. It is within walking distance from the Presidential Palace but not worth a separate visit. Only go there if you are in tbe area as it is nothing spectacular.

This square was built in the communist times and looks like it. The square is ugly and a concrete monstrosity. The central doesn't even work with no plans to repair it because it would be so expensive to do so. Plus, the square is not popular with the locals anyway. I was only here as part of a walking tour, but I suggest you just walk on by.

Námestie Slobody is a short distance from the Slovak Radio Building, it is the location of the Fountain of Union which was built between 1979 and 1980 and is the biggest fountain in Bratislava and also in the country. The square was called Gottwaldovo during the years of socialism.
The fountain is colossal with a 9 metre tall sculpture of a linden flower as its centrepiece, there is an underground pump room used to supply to the fountain but due to fall of Communism in 1989 and lack of maintenance the fountain was put out of action in 2007 and has been out of order ever since.
The square has fallen into a state of disrepair unfortunately and the fountain is riddled with graffiti but it is still an incredible sight to been, it is a part of Bratislava’s past and may not be as glitzy as some parts of the city it is still an immense structure that should be seen whilst of any visit to the city.

While walking around Bratislava we discovered this Cold War gem. It is a seriously neglected square with the biggest and gaudiest fountain you will probably ever see. The square was formerly known as Gottwald Square because during the communist era a statue of the communist president of Czechoslovakia Klement Gottwald stood prominently in the square. The square is surrounded by 1950's era buildings which are still in use. The benches throughout the square are original. The fountain was added during the 1980's, but hasn't been in use since 2007. The square today is deserted and very run down with graffiti everywhere and some overgrowth along the edges. There are holes in some of the paved walkways so be sure to watch your footing. I would probably visit the square during the daylight because it is quite deserted.
I actually went to this square a second time because I found it so fascinating. If you are at all interested in seeing an original site left over from the Cold War, I highly recommend visiting Namestie Slobody.

The fountain has been repaired and refurbished recently so many of the reviews that appear here are no longer valid. It is a wonderful place for children and families, especially on a sweltering hot day. The water is clean and there are many places to climb and play safely, with water spouts jumping up to surprise the little ones. The restaurants around the perimeter offer good food and drink, with lots of outdoor seating where you can watch the action. An excellent public facility for everyone to enjoy.

There are some signs of life in the square now including a pretty good café. Make sure you look in the 2 huge buildings at either end of the square too. The one furthest from the Old Town is a government ministry with fab 50's décor and a functioning paternoster lift, I have posted some pictures. The other side is the technical university. Some great friezes on the outside and also worth going into the huge entrance hall. A photo of this attached too. And if you love Soviet buildings take the No 1. tram, over the Danube and then walk across to the UFO bridge through the huge blocks of pamelaks from the 1960's. Have put a picture of those too.

It sure of the point if this having a review but if it stops people from seeking it out then my work is done.
This is a dingy park with drunks and homeless people, a fountain that looks like it has been bombed, the paths are broken and dangerous and the graffiti is prolific
Enough said I think

A cancer site of Bratislava … demolish it, bulldozer it ! On our way to the radio and TV building of Bratislava we passed by : a large fountain without water (since 2007?) , grafitti tags everywhere, a weeds and wilderness park, waste and garbage … BHA, Bratislava !
But to be honest : they were just painting all the graffiti benches in a grey color.
