Archaeology tells us that in the year 1001 there was already a church on that same spot. There was a terrible fire in the year 1380 and then the church was re-built in a Gothic Style.
During the Ottoman occupation the church was a bit destroyed In the 1700s the church was rebuilt in the Romanesque/Gothic style. It has had several re-constructions. In 1993 it was elevated to the rank of Cathedral. Before it was a minor Basilica.

I have a video also with chimes but unable to post it. From my week here, if you want to be quite alone to take nice pictures going earlier in the day is very nice and not many people. None of the buildings were open when I was there.

The cathedral is special in many ways. A docen gave us a short tour in Hungarian of the church. There is an upper arm bone of Blessed Gisella, wife of King Stephen I, that was given to the church by the convent in Passau where Gisella is buried. The altar is beautiful. There are stained glass windows of the four famous saints of the area, St. Stephen I King of Hungary, St. Imre, St. Margaret of Hungary and St. Ilona of the Stigmata. There is an exposed wall on entering the church where you can see the original stones of the 11th century building. This is a wonderful church.

This church was very beautiful and a very relaxing place to visit. I liked that it had a tomb with the all seeing eye on the ceiling. There were replicas of important historical items and nice artwork on every side.

We visited the Old Town of Veszprem and passed this Old church on the way. You can go inside and take a look if you want.

A nice cathedral. It was closed when we arrived (during opening hours), but a nice lady from across the museum had the keys, let us in (for a small entrance fee) and also explained a lot of things once we were inside. With her explanation it was well worth the visit.

I will be visiting Budapest the end of May and want to visit Veszprem. My grandfather immigrated to the US from Veszprem and I want to see his home town. Is the best way to arrive by rail? We only have 1 day to visit and will not be able to stay overnight so it would be a day trip. Thank you

It's probably a late answer for you but anyways: you can go by train from Budapest in less then one and a half hour. The train starts from Budapest-Deli station every hour (there are maybe even more connections so you don't always have to wait a full hour for the next train). The ticket prices are about 3000 Forint and for students there's a 50% discount. Buses will take you to the city centre from Veszprém train station. But you can also visit Veszprém by bus. It takes a bit longer than the train but is also recommendable.
