The interior of the church is nothing, though in Italy it's around every turn. Admission is free. The museum, if I may say so, is sluggish at all, two statues, one book and a dozen photos. And a restaurant with beautiful views but deranged prices. The desserts are really delicious, I can't say anything here. The town is very touristy, shops and cafes. But all in all, it would be fine if there was still room to park.

We had a nice visit in this abbey and visited also the restaurant. The church and the surrounding area was very clean and the view over lake Balaton is amazing. I would visit this place again.

We've been in Tihany 20 times and never paid to hour the Abbey until now. Wow! Gorgeous church with fascinating exhibits below. But a book about the place for 1600 forint ( about $6), and be enthralled by the story and the history!!!

Almost a thousand years ago a Hungarian king founded an abbey in Tihany. Today that king, Andrew I lies in his grave in the crypt of that very abbey, and the founding deed includes the first ever written Hungarian words. This alone can be a robust reason for visiting the Benedictine Abbey.
But by buying your ticket in the visitor centre you can also see a short introductory movie, enter the Baroque church with the crypt (with the copy of the founding deed!), then take a look at the memorial room of king Charles IV, last king of Hungary and visit an exhibition on the history of the abbey. Explanatory notes are in Hungarian, English and German.
My personal favourite was the exhibition on the history of the abbey. So far, I wasn't really aware of all the practical details of running an abbey :)
Should you not enter the complex, you can still admire the church from the outside, the stunning view on lake Balaton or just enjoy the atmosphere.

A very beautiful, renovated church, from up above you have a spectacular view on the lake and its surroundings. The entry fee is very small, so go inside, and familiarize yourself with the history of this place.

Upon entering the church I felt the Forint charge was a little excessive, but I was unaware that not only included access to the church, but also to an extensive museum that had something for everyone. There were exhibits about the abbey, the church, the area, some very cool statues of Christ on the cross that were taken down in the 60's (bummer!), and even something about the last Kaiser of Austria!
When you put all that together, the entry price seems entirely reasonable.
But by far the best part of the abbey is it's location, perched on a hill over Lake Balaton. The view is awesome and that part is entirely for free!

Driving along the lake Balaton we saw the brown road sign " Tihany ". With zero info, we drove up to find an interesting village which happened to be a touristic one to our surprised. Parking seemed not easy to find and finally we found one along the village main road. It was a pay parking. We went up following the direction to a baroque Abbey Church. Wow what an idyllic setting. Calendar-inspired views. One can make a pleasant walk in a well-paved pathways. In the Visitor Center, one can buy a ticket for a guided tour + a short film about the Abbey. I recommend this. Friar Richard guided us. A group of tourist had an spontaneous " choir concert ". Around the Abbey is a Guest House that opens whole year round. There is a pastry shop where you can have breakfast or hot meals. It has a terrace overlooking the placid, serene Balaton Lake. Beautiful. When in Balaton Lake, come to this village and be filled with spirituality too. Had a short stay but very meaningful. The Peace of God !

We visit Tihany every time we travel on this side of Lake Balaton because we love the atmosphere and the little streets with hidden gems. The benedictine Abbey is a real symbol of Balaton and should not be left unseen. The museum doses not take a lot of time to visit but it offers a nice view of the local history.

We are taking a train to veszprem and will have approximately two hours before our next train. Do you know if we can reach the abbey from the train station? Thanks

Hello. I shall be visiting the abbey next July. What is the fee and what does it cover? Thank you.
Written April 26, 2015
Dear John,
The entry ticket costs 3.100 HUF pro person, for pensioners and full time students the entry fee is 1.950 HUF. With the entry ticket you can watch the short film about the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, use the restroom, visit the baroque church, the crypt of King Andrew I, the interactive historical exhibition and an art exhibition in the Abbey Museum.
