Dom Square
About
The square with exactly the same area as the Saint Mark Square in Venice (12,000 m2), bordered by elegant, northern European style buildings, was designed by Béla Rerrich and built between 1928 and 1930. On the eastern and southern side there are university institutes, while the western side is lined by the buildings of the bishop’s palace and the college of theology. The National Pantheon, placed under the arcades, includes over a hundred statues representing the prominent characters of Hungarian history, sciences and arts. The Open Air Festival was first held in front of the Votive Church in 1931. In the past decades after the first, religious themed performance, an abundance of theatrical shows have been amusing the audience in the largest “star-roof theatre” in the country.

The most recognized place in the city
Probably one of the most beatiful cathedral, and square all around it, in this part of Europe. Reminds me a little bit on square in Madrid and Venice. Very very clean, like the whole town. Very interesting place for all people, especially for those who like arhitecture, history and generally culture. Recommend to read something about this place before or while you are here.

    Beautiful cathedral
What a beautiful cathedral. Easily accessed and central to Szeged. We had a good look around inside and out climbed the 300 steps of the tower and visited the visitors center exhibition which was really informative and unusually the hungarian text was also in english. The square in front of the cathedral also houses the famous mechanical clock which was also quite unique and you can see the full clock movement twice a day at 12.15 and 18.45(CET). Check to make sure that it hasn't changed if you are visiting.

    Monumentális
Jártunk már itt anno osztálykirándulással, családdal, barátokkal, minden alkalommal lenyűgözött a tér és maga a Dóm. Hatalmas épület, melyre felnézve parányinak érzi magát az ember. Szegeden kihagyhatatlan!

The cathedral is under renovation both inside and outside. The square is untouched however not really the best to visit with the noise of construction around. But it's a beautiful and must visit place.

My visit to Szeged was on a Sunday, and things in the town were nice and peaceful, with little traffic and this square was the centre of that area. There was a nice bench in the middle of the square to sit and relax as you admired the Cathedral

Beautiful harmony of a cathedral and the surrounding buildings built around the turn of the century in somewhat Nordic style. Central Europe’s biggest and most spectacular open air theatre 🎭 is performing here every summer.

When - after the horrible Trianon dictatum - Transsylvania goes to Roumania the University of medicines from Kolozsvár find a refugium in Szeged. The hungaryan guverment bild this Square with the dom in center and the university around. Ancient feeling to walk here. In the summer the whole square is a theather, where you can see monumental operas, musicals.

You can tell the oldies were not stuck for space in a crowded city with this square. It really is very lovely and has a sense of spaciousness.

Do not miss to go inside the cathedral to have a look at the stunning craftmanship n days gone by. Look at the dome....the colours....the detail. Quite stunning.
It is not possible to create such a beauty these days.

We were there in January, on a gloomy day, and the complex looks even bigger than it is. The square was completely empty, with only a few tourists around, and you can see all the details around. There is a clock similar to the one in Prague, the National Pantheon and the Votive Church are a part of the complex. Impressive!

The most beautiful square in the city. Symbol of the square is Votive church that stand proudly in the center of the Panteon. It is located near University of Szeged. You must see the University Library and Demetrius Tower.
