About
The value preserving reconstruction of Kárász Street and Klauzál Square was granted with the Europe Nostra Award in 2004. The downtown palaces display the features of the different competing styles of the time, classicism, eclecticism and Art Nouveau. Their versatile, distinctive nature still creates a uniquely harmonic, well-balanced picture. While having a coffee, a cake or an ice-cream, we can have a look at the full-sized bronze statue of Lajos Kossuth, who made his last speech in Hungary from the balcony of the Kárász House, located on the other side of the square. On the eastern side of the square the harmonic building of the former Hotel Europe can be found as well as the New Zsótér House, which was built on the outer piles of the old castle, and where the operations of the reconstruction were directed from.

Klauzal Square is located in the heart of historic Szeged. It is a long, relatively narrow, rectangular square that is anchored by Kelemen Laszlo street on the East and the Bank of Budapest on the West side. In the middle, thee is a statue of Lajos Kossuth, a hero of one of the War of Independence of 1848. Closer to the Bank of Budapest building, the visitor will find the Millennium fountain. All around the square, there are multiple cafes, restaurants, ice cream parlors and hotels. While the square is divided by the North-South street (Karasz utca), both the square and the street are for pedestrians only. This square is an ideal meeting place for locals and visitors alike and is within a couple of blocks of most tourist attractions in town.

This square it the center of the old historical inner city of Szeged. Buildings around it nicely renovated and on most weekends of the year there are open air festivals or markets. You find two good coffee shops and restaurants in the area and it's the place people meet.

Klauzal Square is a crossroads of sorts for some of Szeged’s main pedestrian streets. All the buildings that border this square are renovated and well preserved and represent the rebirth of the city after the Great flood. The central pieces of the Klauzal Market are, without a doubt, the Millenium Fountain and the statue of Kossuth - the leader of the revolution of 1848. A must-see visit!

Please see my review about Karasz street as this square is in the middle of the high street. There are three nice confectionaries and a great Italian restaurant, a straddle place on this square.

I can't recall seeing a more beautiful Hungarian city. Szeged has figured out that it's not enough to just have old buildings, you need to take good care of them too. The buildings in and around this square showcase Szeged so well. Thumbs up to the people in Szeged who have clearly decided to take wonderful care of their historic buildings so that visitors and locals alike can thoroughly enjoy them.
