The Southern part of what is Hungary today was desolated by the Turkish occupation and the wars that led to it as well as the war of liberation. The Austrian-Hungarian Emperor, fostered the re-settlement of the area by providing favorable settling conditions to various ethnic groups, among them, the Serbs. St. Nicholas church was designed in 1775 and consecrated in 1778. It is located just behind the Votive Church. Severely damaged in the 1879 floods, it was renovated in 1880-1881. Most of the icons predate the flood, while the main fresco (The Creation of the World) was painted afterwards. The Baroque structure has a three-part apse. The numerous icons to be found in this church are a treasure and deserve careful viewing. The iron screen, decorated with gold accents is one of the most beautiful in the entire country.

The serbian orthodox church is situated near the Dom Square, but it is hidden between buildings. It is an old church, but well preserved.

Another historical sight not to be missed. It's beautiful both inside and outside. There are so many stories that the Church can tell us if we just take the time.

If you are familiar with the orthodox architecture then this is an opaque church which can not be compared with the ones from East Europe. But it is unique, it represents the Serbian community and is built in Baroque style. Take some time and visit it!

A lovely little orthodox church, the monument of the rich history of the Serbian community living in Hungary. It was built around the old church and when it was finished the old church was demolished and took out through the entrance of the new one, so that the Serbian people in Szeged haven't been without the service a day.
It has a beautiful rococo style iconostasis, which is unusual for this type of churches and it's the only one.
It's also known as a place where The Hymn to Saint Sava is written and performed for the first time.

Nice Serbian Orthodox church, built in 18th century by Serbs who fled Serbia after unsuccessful war campaign in by Habsburgs. It looks like any other baroque churches, but inside it has very nice decorations.
