So many people visiting just stick to Budapest. We were glad we made the 120 km drive north to visit this beautiful part of Hungary for the day. Salgo Castle was easy to find - the car park is large and free. Several trails lead up in the direction of Salgo Castle. The view is stunning. We visited in autumn, so it was even better than expected. Hiked up with our boys, ages 8 & 9 and we all found it very manageable. After a lovely picnic at Salgo Castle, we drove over to Somosko Castle, too -- which was very worthwhile. Great way to "make a day" of the trip up from Pest County when we were ready to spend some time away from the big city.

Easy walk, nature, beautiful views, good air, forest, but not in rainy weather. 1 km away is another beautiful castle, Somos Castle.

The area around Salgótarján, Hungary is full of old castles, mostly partly refurbished only, but they are still impressive in their state of ruin.
It is worth to visit Salgo Castle ( abt 600 m over sea level) from where you have a beautiful panorama on the opposite Somoskő Castle, and on the surrounding hills and colourful autumn forests.
The road up to Salgo Castle is a bit steep and rocky at the end.
Not far from the Salgó castle on the other direction you may also climb Boszorkánykő ( Witch-Stone) an interesting piece of basalt rock.
There are nice tourist walking routes in the surrounding forests.
On the Slovak side of the border not far from Somoskő you might have a tasty dinner, with a good beer after the day tour. In Somoskő village there are many hostels, aparments available ( some allow pets as well) but in high season you have to make a reservation well in advance.

Nicely renovated rather than fully restored with fantastic 360 degree views. The walk up is a little steep in places but well worth it.

Castle ruin is nice it is hard to climb up but totally worth it! The view to the city and the area is amazing. When it is a clear day you can also see the Bükk mountains and even the High Tatras mountains in Slovakia!

This is an old castle ruin. There is only one base still standing. Magnificent view into the surrounding area and nearby Somoska castle.

Plan it as a double trip also to Šomoška. Also try to go when it is sunny and the castle will reward you with some amazing view.

Don't miss Boszorkanyko! Nice shirt walks for both castles. In Somosko castle you can observe the still standing impact of Trianon: the village in Hungary, but the fort that gave name to the village has a state boundary in a 20m circle now in Slovakia. Stunning views from atop.

Unfortunatly, there's no mention of world's unique stone waterfall, wich is located at Slovakian side of castle Šomoška.

This is the most famous landmark in Salgotarjan which is dates back to the 13th century. Can be easily reached buy bus or car. Car park is about 15 mins away from the castle. Not very well signposted, but you can surely find the castle by heading west from the car park (following the footpath) and turning right end of the path. The view is beautiful from the castle.
