It’s a fantastic area, in the noth of Hungary in Bukk mountains. It became a protected National Park in 1976. There are lots of trails for hiking, but everybody can find walking pathes, too. We are not real hard hikers, so we only were walking around the Hamori-lake and in the forest. It’s was wonderful: fresh air, silence and peace.

By walk or by bicycle: get a tourist map for Bukk National Park. You will find roads and lots of path marked with tourist signs in different shapes and colours on the map. Choose your destination and walk or cycle or drive. Just two recommendations here: Javorkut near Miskolc city is a nice plateau (you can reach it by car also), a guesthouse called Sebesviz with good restaurant is there too. Enjoy a walking in the area and have a good food after that. An other place is Szilvasvarad a village on the north-west side of the park where you can park your car and walk or cycle or choose the forest railway to go in this nice valley. There are also many restaurants. Learn more about this 43000 ha national park from its official site: http://bnpi.hu/int/?lang=eng

Just a neat open air train ride to a nice park by Lillafured. There are vendors and restaurants that serve beer. The grounds are well maintained and the ride up in the open air train was pleasant as well. We walked around Lillafured and by the lake across from the train stop. Pretty sure there was ice cream involved as well. All in all a great afternoon.

This park is outstanding, it includes the Lillafured hotel and gardens. The parks can be seen by rambling through the numerous trees, viewing waterfalls, ponds, lake and mountain paths watching out for the abundant wildlife this forest has to offer. For the less active patrons who still wish to see this wonderful place, there is a train which provides a choice of three different routes through the mountain at a nominal cost. Great day out, but start early and finish with a meal at Lillifured hotel restaurant but be mindful of bus timetable if using public transport.

The Bükk mountain is one of the most beautiful part of Hungary. There are several hiking trails, and you can do them for days without touching the previous ones. If you want you can choose such hiking trails, where you can walk for hours without meet other people. You can find several wells, where you can get refreshing, drinkable cold water. There are caves, historical sites (ruins) and several small "settlements", where you can even find good restaurants. The nature is beautiful in every season.

You can visit the National Park from different places. Now I will show you my experiences in the Eastern side.
If you go from Miskolc to the NP, you must visit Lillafüred. It's a touristy place.
Then you can go to the direction of "the heart" of the NP by Forest Railway.
If you take off at the 1st station you can climb up to Jávorkút. It's a 1,5 half long track.
Take a test there (there is a restaurant, accomodation) and then go to Forward to Bankut. (it is 2,3 hours trip from there).
There you can find a tourist house and a 3 star hotel. I offer the tourist house.
A great trip could be a walk to "Szentlélek".
The rocks near the village is amazing. You can see the Tatras in good weather conditions.
From here you can continue your trip to Omassa, on a non-used backroad.
Or if you dont want to visit Szentlelek, from Bankut you can walk down to Omassa in the Szárazvölgy. (Dry walley).
Then you can go back to Miskolc by pubilc transportation. The cost is cca 1,5 Euro.
Or you can continue your trip back to Lillafüred.
Bankut-Omassa is 1 hour, Omassa-Lillafüred also 1 hour.
You can find the final station of the Forest Railway next to the track, so it could be an other option to go back to Miskolc.
If you walk and you need an accomodation look for the Négy Évszak Vendégház. The owner is an english teacher, so it cant be problem to communicate with them.
All of the tracks are well-marked, but dont forget to buy a tourist map before you go into the forest.
There is cellphone sign around Bankut only!
I hope I could help you! ;-)
Have a nice time in The Bükk!

Hiking across the Bukk is a challenge you will want to repeat. The winding trails, breathtaking vistas & pristine streams teaming with trout will enchant you. Pack accordingly, it will be a FULL day for a seasoned hiker. A walking stick may come in handy due mainly to the angles you'll experience and an occasional slick spot you'll encounter. Have a plan, a map, and a hiking partner that will compliment the journey. Be familiar with the route you plan on taking and let someone know your timetable, help and cellphone signal may not be readily available. With Lillafured on one end and Szilvasvarad on the other you can't loose. There are excellent cafes in Szilvasvarad featuring trout and wild game- close your eyes and just point at one on the menu, you can't go wrong. Remember...your in wine country!

We hiked around Lillafured. Take the small train, check out the trout farm. The smoked trout was excellent. Nice hiking trails in the forest near lake Hamori.

Ohhhhh dear good, what a phenomenal scenery. The whole area are just so amazing beautiful. I live in the S/W part of Hungary in the "hills" area at the Balaton, and if I've ever should consider mowing to another part of Hungary, I've would move to this beautiful area, period !

It does not take very long to get out here, but is amazing. In the heat of the Summer it will always be cooler up here and you can really appreciate a nice and quite walk far, but not too far from everything. Tranquility.

Hi... I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for a nice day hike (8-10 km +/-) that shows the best of the park - mountains forests and streams. I'm sure any trail would be beautiful but if someone has an idea of a nice all-around hike.
Also, is there a specific store in Eger that definitely has hiking maps? Or is any bookstore ok?
Thanks

You can buy maps in bookstores. I am pretty sure there is an Alexandra or Libri bookstore in Eger. There you can find a larger selection of maps, specifically about walks. In Hungary there are colour-coded walks (blue, green) that are going right across the country touching important and significant places. It goes through the Bukk National Park. You can pick any part of these walks and gives you information about elevation, roads the whole lot.
I personally prefer the fells around Miskolc. Lillafured, Omasa, Bukkszentkereszt, the Hamori-lake and the waterfall at Lillafured are really great. The fells are excellent around there too.

We plan to stay 5 days in Lillafurad as of next week. I want to take short walking trails in the park. Can you suggest trails up to 5-6 km? how can I get a map of the park? can I take the train, stop somewhere and find marked trails?
Any suggestion what to see while staying in Lillsfurad?
Thanks

Dear Shoshi,
There are several designated walking trails of varying lengths and difficulties, all of these designated trails are equipped with fixed maps but i am sure that paper maps would be available at the numerous souvenir shops, cafes and watering holes throughout the park. Alternatively you could take the train, which covers three different routes, outbound and walk back. We on the other hand were more spontaneous and just went where the trail took us. There is just so many beautiful thing to see, these change with the seasons but make a point of seeing the chateaux {now a hotel} and the beautiful gardens, the lake and the waterfalls.
There is also a wonderful restaurant attached to the hotel with great food and very reasonable prices.
Hope this helps you and have a wonderful trip.

Where can I pick up a detailed hiking map of Bukk? Is there somewhere I can buy one online? Are they readily available in Budapest?

The most popular is túristatérkép Bükk from Cartographia. You can buy it in any bookshop, not just in Budapest.

Is the site open in September ?.
How much is available for a family with three children?
How late is open the site?
Is there accessed from agar?
Is the state forest railways of lillafured passes through the site?
