About
Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park opened on 20th August 1983. Our zoo is located in a 21 hectare hornbeam-oak forest connected to the Bükk National Park, this way we can also present the rich flora and fauna of the Bükk Mountains. Written records prove that King Louis the Great had established a royal game preserve in the Csanyik valley in 1355, therefore our zoo is considered to be Hungary’s oldest animal holding place. The zoo is home to around 700 specimens of nearly 130 species and varieties. Visitors can also meet the residents of a typical forest of the Carpathian Basin, the exotic animals of far away continents and native domestic animals that have become curiosities nowadays. Besides presenting animals to visitors, we would also like to draw attention to the small wonders of nature surrounding us. An educational pathway was created for this purpose to exhibit the natural values of our immediate environment. Our zoo also takes part in international breeding programmes that have made it possible for animals extinct in the wild to survive in zoos. A unique initiative was to establish a conservation statue park with life-size bronze statues of animals commemorating the species’ that became extinct as a result of human activity. Our zoo endeavours to join in the popularization of conservation and animal protection and to help environmental education reach all ages, especially the rising generations. The forest environment of Miskolc Zoo is an excellent place to make friends with nature.

Visited on a weekday so there was no crowd at all. Easily parked close to the entrance.
Compared to other country side ZOOs the park is rather big so prepare for a long walk including some up and down.
The range of animals is nice and have some rarely seen specimen too.
On the flip side: the presentation of the animals is poor. This type of “fence and iron bars” setup is out of style since a while.

My wife and I decided to visit Miskolc zoo recently as it's not too far from where we live.We originally wanted to visit Nyiregyhaza zoo but didn't have time.
We finally arrived at the zoo after losing the directions at one point....one minute there were signs, the next there weren't which is not great when you're at a T-junction.
The setting is very pleasant, surrounded by forests and the entry fee was only 980 huf (about £3).
It was a fairly cold day and there was still quite a lot of snow on the ground which hadn't been cleared from the footpaths within the zoo, this made things very slippery in places.
There was a good selection of animals for a small zoo and many of the enclosures were very visitor friendly. Not only do they have animals from several continents, they also have several species found in the forests of Hungary such as wild boar, mouflon and deer. The management are in the process of developing some of the enclosures. Unfortunately some of the older enclosures are far too small for the animals within. The tiger exhibit held 3 tigers and was just a small mud bath. They had no stimulation and merely wandered around the perimiter in an anticlockwise direction. Other animals in very small enclosures were the wolves, fox and panthers.
Overall we enjoyed our afternoon but we'd have rather paid a little more money and know that more was being done for the long-term wellbeing of the animals there with larger pens and more stimulation. This is a very old-style zoo and not in keeping with modern expectations. Would we recommend this zoo? Yes, it is great for children and the more people visit the more likely the enclosures will be improved which will be better for the animals.

Visited with my wife and our 2 year old son, plus some of he wider Hungarian family and their young children. Nice setting, tucked away in the forest, which meant their was plenty of shade on a hot August day. Quite a small zoo and some of the enclosures seemed quite small, especially the one for the two tigers. Only complaint was that the cashier who sold the tickets wasn’t particularly helpful. My wife had to trek back to the entrance when we got to the petting area and realised you couldn’t buy the feed pellets there. There was no pocket map, so other visitors may find it useful to take a picture of the large map at the entrance. It’s not a huge place, but it’s helpful if children are keen to see particular animals and don’t have the patience to wait until you arrive their naturally. Good way to entertain the kids for a couple of hours.

Visiting the zoo on a weekday morning, I first headed to the Miskolc tourism center where they told me which tram and bus to take. We arrived successful at the entrance of the zoo. As we departed the bus and the bus driver indicated that you had to call to check pick up time. This would be an issue since I don't speak Hungarian. Luckily he wound up coming at the scheduled pick up time listed on the sign.

At the zoo we made our rounds looking at the animals. We were confused and never found a way to get to the other side of the of the zoo. No one spoke English and none of that paths appeared to lead us in the direction. So after looking at all the animals we could and playing at the playground, we decided to leave.

Over all good way to spend the morning with 2 kids 10&4.

The zoo can easily be reached by bus number one from the town, it is the last stop, or alternatively tram 1, and change to bus 5 or 15, warning though the bus stops at the bottom of the hill and it is a long walk to the top, we nearly gave up several times, especially when we past several old and abandoned buildings. The zoo is small and seems to be mainly filled with goats, and deer, but there is a tiger, two brown bear, a leopard, and three Meercats, it is spread out amongst the trees, and as it was a quite day, most of the animals seemed really pleased to see us, and run up to the fences, even the leopard run over and then rolled over purring. The animals all look well cared for and are clearly socialised. It only costs 1,200 f to get in about £3. The paths are very rough and not really suitable for wheelchairs, though they are clearly making improvements all the time

We went to Lillafured then the Zoo.
The Zoo isn`t huge, but has a decent assortment of animals.
We spent a couple of pleasant hours there and had very tasty hamburgers for lunch from its small café.
A relaxing place to stroll around.
