We visited Gyor on our Daytrip journey from Budapest to Vienna. Located half way between these two major European capitals, Gyor is at the confluence of three rivers, the Danube, Raba and Rabca.
The earliest settlers of the area were the Celts in the 5th century BC, followed by the Romans in the 1st century BC, the Slavs in the 6th century AD, the Lombards, the Franks and then the Magyars, the founders of the Hungarian state in the 9th century AD. The city was the scene of frequent conquests and occupations by the Ottomans over the Centuries and was completely burnt down in the 1600's.
Gyro is considered the second richest town in historical buildings in Hungart despite its varied past. The city has charming cobbled stone streets, a collection of Neo-Baroque secular buildings and magnificent Churches.

Győr is the most beautiful town in Hungary. I live here since i was born, but still can find misterious and romantic corners i haven't seen before. You must stop here on your way between Vienna and Budapest to find the best place in this Country. Take a walk, visit the oldtown, go to the ballet, drink some fröccs (vine and soda) in the hometown of soda water. Ask a friendly university student to show you the best places, it is sure that he will help you. Meet your new love, your neighbour, your brother, your best friend here, in the CityOfMeetings. Discover my hometown, because it is the best you can do.

This is a place we'd never heard of before stumbling upon it, and were glad we did. It's a town with a long history, with a historic centre being testament to that. It's a lovely area to wander around and soak up history, at the confluence of 2 small rivers, offshoots of the Danube. Tourists seem to be starting to trickle in but it feels far less commercial than some other towns in the region.

We visited in the summer when it was nice to also sit out and eat or have a coffee. We're also just been this month before Christmas and enjoyed the Christmas markets around the town, including the open air ice rink by the river. There were a number of nice touches, such as faux reindeer and Santa's sleigh for the kids to sit on, and free games for the kids to play in the main square. There's a big ferris wheel by the river too though it was slightly pricey for the whole family so we enjoyed it from the bottom.

We really liked the old town. Its small, so you can walk around for a few hours and get a good idea of the town. Very difficult to find a parking spot in the downtown area. There are lots of restaurants around.

If you are looking for a day out of vienna, try the EU regio ticket from OBB. For 21 euros round trip, you can take the regional trains to Gyor. from the train station, you walk straight out of the front entrance crossing a major road ( or just follow where most people are walking) and you will find yourself in the pedestrian zone heading to the old town area of Gyor. It is not as touristy as the old town area of Bratislava and therefore has its own charm. There are many restaurants, some nice shops and many old buildings and streets that have recently been redone and are beautiful. You will also find the old cathedral area and the large square area with cafes and restaurants all around it. I believe it is called Szechenyi Square.

We really enjoyed our afternoon in Gyor. The ladies in the tourist information office were very helpful and gave us a leaflet with a walking route round the main sites which was very helpful. The city itself is quite compact and very picturesque with stunning architecture, fountains and statues.
