We visited the Castle Museum on 7/15/2016 and enjoyed a remarkable young man as our tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable with the history and small facts about the Castle and it's long history. After touring the interior including the magnificently preserved chapel, the tour ends on the uppermost level with breathtaking views of the entire Esztergom region and especially... More

take the SIKLO up to the castle hill ... even if you are not a museum-person, the view from here of the danube river is iconic! but for a taste of classic hungarian art, the museum is a national treasure trove. the grounds are lovely, make sure you see the fountains of the "hon-foglalas" ... the legend of hun hunters... We took the 30min tour of the castle. Our guide spoke good English and could answer our questions. It was a good introduction to the history of the castle and, to some extent, of Hungary but we visited a small part of the castle. Maybe a longer tour would have been better. Also, we felt a little rushed, possibly because... More

We took the English tour through the castle. The guide was excellent! We began in the oldest portion of the castle, climbed the White tower which had magnificent views of the surrounding area, saw the frescoes being restored, marveled at the chapel, saw both kitchens, the prison cells and the wells. An amazing day!

Interesting Museum, well worth the visit. Luckily I was visiting with a Hungarian friend so he was able to translate anything not in English

The castle was renovated recently, so it does not look like a proper castle from the middle age, but if you go inside, and take the guided tour, you'll see that inside, it is still the 1000 year old castle as it was when Hungary had its first king (who was born in this castle by the way). On this... More

We did not visit the 'castle' as a big part of it turns out to be build from modern bricks ... but you only see that after you have climbed up the hill. Probably it is a nice reconstruction of the ancient building (at least more honest than some restaurations we have seen in the past), but to us the... More

Although Eszertgom is less than 30 miles from Budapest, there is no easy way to get there by public transportation. The trains, which apparently ran up until recently, have stopped serving Eszertergom. The bus that goes there is a local, city bus which stops every few blocks and takes 90-120 minutes, If you have a car, it is worth visiting... More

We stayed in Budapest for 5 days so I was looking for towns nearby which would be interesting to visit. I discovered that a ferry goes to Esztergom, taking 4 hours. It is a pleasant journey with great scenes of Budapest from the water as you leave, and of the castle and monastery at Esztergom as you arrive. It is... More
