Do not purchase a ticket. The basilica is free to enter. You can't jump the queue, so its pointless. If your on a vatican museum/cistine Chappel tour and pay the extra for the tour, you can queue jump, and the queue is hrs. Paying for a basilica ticket/scan code is a complete con.

The Basilica of Eger the second biggest church in Hungary. It is surrounded by a nice park. It was built in the middle of 19th century but the painting of the frescoes were finished only in 1950. There are no works of famous painters in the church, but the image is charming. Very impressive building with four sculptures at the main entrance.
Deserves a visit if you’re in Eger.
Let me mention it here-since I couldn't find any other opportunities- that to the right of the main steps to the basilica is the entrance to the former archbishop’s cellars.
That interesting place, called “Város a város alatt” (City under the city). This is a very long great wine complex, built in the 18th century. Approximately 3 km long, but the guided tour leads you through only 700 m. A 45 minutes’ walk under the city and in the history is something you shouldn't miss, if you’re visiting Eger.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle (a.k.a. Eger Cathedral) is the seat of Catholic Archdiocese of Eger. The cathedral was built 1831 - 1837, designed by architect József Hild. The cathedral is grandly set on a small hill, facing Eszterházy Károly University. A monumental staircase is flanked with statues (Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the left and Saint Steven and Saint Ladislas on the right). The neo-Classical portal is supported by six Corinthian columns with a pediment inscribed with "Venite Adoramus Dominium" (Come, let us worship the Lord). At the top of the main building are statues of the Virgin Mary flanked by saints. The interior is a basilica with three naves, softly lit by fan windows and lavishly decorated. The 40-m dome contains a large mural in Italianate style. The carved marble pulpit and main alter are well done. From May to October there is a daily half-hour organ concert at noon. The Basilica is open from 7am-7pm Mon-Sat, 1-7pm Sun with a suggested donation of 300 HUF.

Absolutely stunning church. Same designer as St. Stephen's in Budapest. Huge inside, lovely muted colors. Dome paintings stunning. Worth a look for sure. Nicest church I've seen in Hungary so far.

this is a must see sight, it is beautiful on the outside and outstanding on the inside with sensational artwork, statues and so much gold work it is difficult to take it all in. The frescos are breathtaking. The Basilica is also a cool and calm haven on a very hot day. Welcome respite.

Baroque feel but not overdone. Fairly bright. Great center dome. Nice stained glass. Second largest organ in Hungary. A couple nice paintings on the ceiling.

5-10 minute walk from the main square.

The Basilica is one of the highlight of the city, so are very likely to visit whithout me nagging you. The mid-day organ concert, however, is easy to miss, so be there by 11:30 on workdays and Saturday, or at 12:45 on Sunday! HUF 800 for adults.

This compares favourably with the basilica in Budapest and it’s easy to see why they are mentioned in the same breath. A beautiful building.
