- ТигрёнокVienna, Austria365 contributionsNice place to have a stroll through and explore all the various towers, nooks, and exhibits. You can try archery and other activities there, and learn a lot about the local history, and for those who like castles in general, this is a great place as well - very well maintained and a large area to walk through. Pricing is very moderate, especially if you can get a family ticket. Naturally, the view over the city is fabulous, too.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024
- ppeyrardLyon, France6,074 contributionsYou have to make it up. 2 possible entrances, opposite each other. We went through Valfalsetany. Admission not given but it would seem that it entitles the Entrance to museums... but which ones? We're still looking. Not much, the reconstruction is relatively recent. Some explanations with a film with English subtitles. Audio guide at the information center, but they only rent the machine WITHOUT THE HEADPHONES. To do for the point of view.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 10, 2024
- Denis BConselice, Italy559 contributionsEarly morning visit to Eger. Perhaps a little too early because the castle was still closed. Tickets not exactly cheap, but they're valid all day. You can come and go anytime. The decently maintained castle, some maintenance work. Beautiful view from the top of the tower. Perhaps more beautiful is the town centre, full of shops, bars and restaurants. Here I bought the typical red bull blood wine. Although the interior of the castle is really poorly signed, the outer walls have been restored to an amazing point and are really picturesque. However, due to poor signage, we almost missed the cool exhibit on medieval torture devices. And, it’s possible that we missed other exhibits too. The entrance fee is not unreasonable and since they authorities are clearly doing a ton of work on the castle, it felt like money well spent.

Fantastic castle, with a lot of history, everything is written in Hungarian and English. There is a lot to experience and see. Fantastic view of the city. Cafe in the middle and drinking places all around. Paid 600 HUF for the vox museum. It was one room and one floor. But for that price, you can't expect much. They have people dressed up around in old costumes. Remember that they expect payment if you take a picture with them. You can spend many hours there, if you are going to take everything with you. Suggest you visit in two rounds. The entrance ticket is valid until 22.00, when the gates close. Most exhibitions are open until 6pm. But you can walk around and look at what's outside.

The fort itself is as beautiful as it has been for many decades. But the visitor system has changed and not for the better.
The ground used to be free to visit and only the exhibitions needed ticket. Now everything is chargeable and the system is confusing too. The walk around tickets are available late afternoon for a couple of hours only. Groups can’t use their own guide has to hire one from the fort, which limits availability greatly.
An other thing that annoyed me in particular was the signs everywhere. There are huge signs on literally everywhere saying The Government of Hungary spent X amount on preserving things. It is part of our culture, history, preserving is their job. Doesn’t need to be advertised that they are doing their job. What makes it even worse what the small print: it is EU money, not even theirs.
I would still recommend visiting it at least once.

Visited in mid February, only one installation (+wax statues for an extra 500 huf)was open, which was nice, but for the price we pay it doesn’t worth it (2000 huf). I’m sure it’s an amazing experience in summer time, I saw that there was many existing things to see - which were closed for us, but I do not recommend in winter. At least they could lower the price in winter, but nope... be prepared for disappointment if you go between November and March!

They make you pay full price without telling you that you have to pay additional for the audio guide, that you can only visit the casemates with a hungarian-speaking guided visit.that has again n additional cost... and on top of.it, the site is at the moment a big heap of instruction work... I wouldn't mind if only they took that into account in their prices...

Easy to find, just follow the road signs for the Castle (or Var).
Parking is free on the outside walls of the Castle.
Ticket is 2400 HUF (6 EUR) for Adult person. And Discounted Entry (between the ages of 6-26 and 62-70) is1200 HUF (3 EUR).
It's a very nice complex with lot of area to explore and the view of Eger city from the top is amazing. There are a few shops for snacks and coffee, located before the entrance to the Castle. But you can bring your own food also.
Also there are 2 souvenir vending machines. And you should visit the museum also inside the walls.

The castle is big and beautifully located at the top of a hill overlooking Eger. We have been to a lot of castles over time with our two children (6 and 8 years old) and were hoping it would have an child friendly and interactive character. Although it is very informative and beautifully restored it is less suited for small children due to the lack of interactive displays. In addition, some parts are under construction and thus not accessible. All in all it was pretty, but to our opinion not great when visiting with small children and costly for what it offert us.

Entrance tickets have gone up to (hold yourself) 3.600 HUF! What a joke... Like others have said it's okay-ish but that's it really. Best to visit the castle part itself after 17:00 when prices drop like a rock because the galeries are closed.

I visited the castle on the weekend with my wife and we had a great morning exploring. There are a number of little displays inside of the castle that showcase some of the rich history of the castle and the town of Eger. The cost of entry was about 2000 HUF per person to enter. There are some amazing views of the town of Eger and wonderful photo opportunities. Well forth a visit.

Eger castle is the most important attraction in Eger. It is a short walk from city center to get there. There are several different exhibitions inside different buildings, also there are staffs played as warriors of medieval, & fire guns at noon & afternoon. One can walk along walls to view the city scenery. There is a souvenirs & a good restaurant for guests.

Is it possible to enter inside a castle's yard independently from paying a ticket? I see that castle doesn't work on Mondays, but I would like to take a walk.
Written November 9, 2018
I asked exactly the same thing. We were told that you had to pay an entrance when the museum was open, but the castle grounds are free to walk around when the museum is closed. So most of the time, you have to pay, even if you don't want to go in the museums (though they were more interesting than I expected).
There was a note explaining this in Hungarian (which I could just about work this out from), but the girl on the ticket booth explained it to my Hungarian companion too, so it is definitely correct.
