Honors a great Hungarian patriot
Sep 2019
Lajos Kossuth (1802 - 1894) was a patriot, statesman and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the (unsuccessful) revolution of 1848–49. His skilled political debates, stirring public speeches and patriotic writings inspired many Hungarians to rise up against the Austrian Empire. Kossuth made the Hungarian Declaration of Independence at the nearby Great Church on April 14, 1848. After the revolution was suppressed by Russian troops, Kossuth fled Hungary in 1849 and died in exile in Italy in 1894. The Art-Nouveau statue (by sculptors Ede Margó and Pongrácz Szigfrid) was unveiled in May, 2014. Lajos Kossuth, in 19th century dress, stands alone on a 5m limestone pedestal inscribed "Kossuth". On the left, Imre Szacsvay, (the Parliament notary and editor of the Declaration of Independence), holds a pen and notes in his hand. Next to him is Baron Zsigmond Perényi, the Speaker of the House of Magnates (both were executed on October 24, 1849). Behind is Mihály Tóth Könyves, a priest at the battle of Kossuth, who encouraged fighters, comforted the wounded, and buried the fallen. He was also sentenced to death, but the sentence was changed he was released after eight years of imprisonment. The right side of the statue group depicts a peasant woman (Hungary?) being reassured by a uniformed soldier holding a furled flag. The massive pale-yellow Great Church provides an impressive backdrop. The memorial is available at all times with no entry fee.

Statue of a great Hungarian Leader
May 2018 • Family
This statue is located in Kossuth square, in front of the Great Church. It's a calm place in the heart of the city with lots of flowers, benches and a fountain. You can relax here and drink a coffee or eat an ice cream. Lajos Kossuth was one the greatest Hungarian Leader. They wanted to get independence. His famous chair is inside the Great Church.

This is quite an impressive statue dedicated to the leader of the Hungarian independent movement back in mid 19th century.

The statue is located just outside the church and the Grand Hotel. Nice area with open space. Great for taking pictures and viewing historical buildings in the area.

Inspiring

I've always been mesmerized by this statue, to me it's the manifestation and great reminder of the importance of autonomy. Located at the very heart of charming historical town Debrecen, it's always a great sight when having a promenade on the town's main square. Takes me back to a place beyond time, to the sphere of such high ideals as independence, goodwill and herodom.

Debrecen, indeed all of Hungary, is deeply steeped in history and tradition. This statue is part of that located near the Great Church in downtown Debrecen.

A nice piece of art
Dec 2016
The statue is located in front of the Church. It's one of the oldest piece of art from Debrecen. In every year hundreds of elementary school pupils bring some flower and the tricolor ribbons to remember of our first big revolution : 15th March ,1848.

Just another Kossuth Statue
Jun 2016 • Business
The statue is situated in the front of the Great Church on the main square of Debrecen.
The square is nice with fountains but nothing special. It is a "sleepy & relaxed" city! :-)

To remember the 1848 revolution
Oct 2015 • Couples
Louis Kossuth / Kossuth Lajos was a lawyer, a journalist, a politician and a Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848–49, celebrated on March 15th. He was so important to Hungary that he has a statue in many cities, including in front of the Parliament in Budapest.
In Debrecen you can find him (and some friends) in front of the large yellow church (Nagyon templom), on a huge center plaza. A nice brass statue.
