The Great Church is a special place even for non-believers since it is an iconic historical building of Debrecen with very interesting exhibitions. For me it is a place of peace and worship.

It's a beautiful statement of the city. The location of the church is the perfect guidance spot for the tourist who get lost in this big "town".

The Reformed Great Church (a.k.a. református nagytemplom) dominates the city center between Kossuth square and Kalvin square. It is the largest Protestant church in Hungary with the largest bell . It was built in 1822 in neoclassical style, designed by Mihály Péchy. The facade is framed by two 61m towers with Baroque roofs and a triangular pediment in between. The left (western) tower contains the 4.6 tonne Rákóczi bell, and offers views over the city (210 steps to climb). Inside, the 55m nave is austere, with dark wooden alter and pulpit. The church has two organs, one above the main entrance, and an older, nicely decorated classical organ behind the pulpit, built in 1838 by Jakob Deutschmann. In April 1849 Lajos Kossuth read the Declaration of Independence from Austria here; there are several exhibits inside the church. The church is beautifully lit at night, and is open daily, generally 9am-6pm (but hours vary slightly on weekends and by season). There is an entry fee of 500 HUF.

As you enter the downtown area of Debrecen it is massive and impossible to miss. It is the largest Protestant Church in Hungary and it has the largest Bell of the Protestant Churches in Hungary. That is why Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome.
There were several churches which were destroyed, one before the present church burned during the Great Fire that destroyed Debrecen in 1802 and the construction of this Great Church started in 1805. The capacity is for 5000 people. The towers are 61 meters high. It is worth visiting.

It is an impressing, even unique church for a Calvinist one - large, beautiful classical style exterior. Inside it is simple; no ornaments just as expected from a Calvinist church. Still you can feel some simple clear beauty, a sort of rural spiritual emanation. It is the most significant Calvinist church in Hungary - the symbol of Debrecen, the city that was known as the "Calvinist Rome" for centuries. It is very important for profane history as well - the dethronisation of the Habsburgs was declared here during the liberty war of 1848-49.

Beautiful church. If you want a wonderful view of Debrecen go to the top of the towers. There is a lift if you feel you cannot climb the narrow, steep stairs Just be aware of the steepness and low beams in certain sections. It was well worth the climb. The view was spectacular.

My husband and I made a quick visit to Debrecen on our cross country drive. It is a nice city and the Great Church is a place you should visit. Historic church!

Didn’t go in but walked by it numerous times. Very impressive building in the heart of the city overlooking market street with its bars and restaurants.

The Great church is the focal point of the city and it stands over the tree lined pedestrian zone and lots of lovely restaurants and bars.
We got a combined ticket to allow us to go up into the bell towers which I’d recommend. Great views of the city and surrounding area. Steps are quite narrow in places.
