The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

A nice looking statue.
Feb 2020
This is a nice looking statue, located in a tiny grassy square.
You can take a look at the statue while walking from Buda castle towards the Fishermen's bastion, or vice versa.

Memorial to anonymous heroes of the 1849 siege of Buda Castle
May 2019
The war memorial is about 300m south of the Fisherman's Bastion. The bronze is by Zala György (1893), celebrating the freedom fighters in Hungarian War of Independence. Buda Castle was assaulted and captured in May 1849, after fierce fighting. The statue stands in a small park, and is dedicated to anonymous heroes of the castle siege. A soldier stands beside a broken cannon, waving a banner (reading "Freedom or Death."), while winged victory holds an olive crown above. Bronze leaves and palm branches adorn the statue's plinth. The statue is accessible at all times with no entry fee.

During our tour with Viking we stopped at this statue, on our way to the Fisherman's Bastion. One has to stand still at the many historic moments of Budapest.

Visit this statue as a part of Buda Castle trip
Sep 2018 • Couples
When you visit the iconic Mathias Church (and Fisherman Bastion) from the top point of Buda Castle Funicular, this statue is at the mid distance between these two points, approx 300m walking distance only, built by Zala Gyorgy in 1893 to celebrate anonymous fighters who died in the Independence War in 1848, with the banner reads "Freedom or Death". It is a good and impressive statue although not really spectacular, and free.

Worth a visit
Jul 2017 • Couples
Large statue location in the castle district not too far from Matthias church and the Fisherman's Bastion. It was erected to commemorate the war the mid 1800's against the Austrians. Situated on a green in the fork between two roads it stands well and is worth a visit.
