The Neoclassical style Greek orthodox church is standing on Petőfi square in the heart of the city. The Hungarian Orthodox Cathedral of Our Lady also known as “Istenszülő Elhunyta Nagyboldogasszony-Székesegyház” Following the plans of József Jung's master architect, it was built between 1791 and 1801 through the last touch, the design of the facade was added by Miklós Ybl.In old photos, the two towers look different. During the Second World War, the Cathedral lost one of its towers and for long years it was standing like a half-armed giant. After came long years when where the second tower is standing now, you could see only scaffoldings. At the end of 2019, finally, the second tower made ready but has the same look as the other tower. I have no idea what was the purpose of the two different looking towers, and what is now of the two same looking ones? But I liked better the two different ones. They gave a special character to the building. Now it is a handsome cathedral, but nothing really characteristic about it anymore. When I was walking on the bank of the Danube on the Buda side, I realized how much better looking the Our Lady from there.

Beautiful, astonishing Orthodox Church.
Symbolic importance for Serbian people, living in Pest and Buda for centuries.
Beside, important church for Russian, Ukrainian people visiting Budapest.

Hungary is rather catholic, but there are some Orthodox churches. The most beautyful is in the city of Budapest, a short walk from the Danube, from the Elisabeth Bridge. Lookat the amazing altar screen!

If you are religious it is worth to stop here by. The curch (cathedral) is huge and monumental and has a very calm environment inside.

Outside the cathedral, it is quite different from the traditional Orthodox churches. Unfortunately we could not get inside as its working time is very limited
