The Neoclassical style Greek orthodox church is standing on Petőfi square in the heart of the city. The Hungarian Orthodox Cathedral of Our Lady also known as “Istenszülő Elhunyta Nagyboldogasszony-Székesegyház” Following the plans of József Jung's master architect, it was built between 1791 and 1801 through the last touch, the design of the facade was added by Miklós Ybl.In old photos, the two towers look different. During the Second World War, the Cathedral lost one of its towers and for long years it was standing like a half-armed giant. After came long years when where the second tower is standing now, you could see only scaffoldings. At the end of 2019, finally, the second tower made ready but has the same look as the other tower. I have no idea what was the purpose of the two different looking towers, and what is now of the two same looking ones? But I liked better the two different ones. They gave a special character to the building. Now it is a handsome cathedral, but nothing really characteristic about it anymore. When I was walking on the bank of the Danube on the Buda side, I realized how much better looking the Our Lady from there.

Outside the cathedral, it is quite different from the traditional Orthodox churches. Unfortunately we could not get inside as its working time is very limited

The outside is clad in scaffolding but inside the cathedral is amazing. Very light inside with fabulous mosaics.

For a complete understanding of the period associated with the Soviet presence in Hungary it becomes indispensable to appreciate the details that are available within this important Orthodox church. Knowing that this space was shared by all Orthodox, it became a place where "bridges" of positive contacts were established.
In addition to the inside details, this monument is from the architectural point of view it is a very special church with singularities, to be discovered by the visitors.

Beautiful, astonishing Orthodox Church.
Symbolic importance for Serbian people, living in Pest and Buda for centuries.
Beside, important church for Russian, Ukrainian people visiting Budapest.

This is a small orthodox church. It is kind of dark to see things clearly. It is free to enter but pictures are not allowed. Unless you are an avid church lover, skip it.
