Abstract sculpture commemorating the formation of Budapest
May 2019
Centennial Memorial is on Margaret Island in a small roundabout 350m north of the Margaret Bridge ramp, and 80m south of the musical fountain. It was erected in 1973 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the union of three cities: Buda, Pest and Óbuda to form Budapest. The 4.5m high monument, by sculptor István Kiss, is abstract, looking somewhat like a split cone? candle flame? praying hands? Looking closely at the interior, I discerned bronze reliefs of historic artifacts such as a ship's wheel, candelabra, clock gears, prison window, propeller, and Soviet star. Regrettably, I found no interpretive information about the symbolism. The memorial is surrounded by colorful flower beds. It is accessible at all times and with no entry fee.

Memory for uniting.
Sep 2019
Not far from the entrance of the Island, in front of the Music fountain stands this tall memorial. It was erected to commemorate of the uniting of Buda, Pest, and Obuda. It looks likes a huge slender half-open flower bud. As I read, inside are reliefs, embleming events of the history of Hungary. It can be correct, but all that I was able to see, some little berries, and wheels. Probably my fantasy isn't rich enough to decipher these symbols.

the island

we arrived on margaret island and after a short walk seeing nothing, this was the first thing we saw. It's unusual and arty like much of Budapest. It's just before the fountain. We liked it

Worth a look

This is located near the singing water foundation, it is very interesting to look at from different angles we visited as the sun was going down so it was a little more quieter but can imagine it would be quite touristy

Monument of unification
Aug 2017 • Couples
On first glance you don't know what to make of this monument until you realise the symbolism of it, then the design makes more sense if on Margaret Island you can't miss it.

A memorial to the city's unification
May 2017 • Couples
From Margaret Bridge, the main road into the park on Margaret Island leads straight down to the Centennial Memorial, it is a memorial built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the unification of the city in 1973, the union between Buda, Pest and Óbuda(a former city in Hungary). I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to see this bronze monument but since returning home I have looked up the significance of the memorial which explains why it is positioned in such a highly visible location in a much loved local park in Budapest.
