Neighborhood: District VII / Jewish Quarter
District VII is the very heart of Budapest and houses the city’s Jewish Quarter. Its streets are lively and colorful, its buildings narrate different histories in an assortment of architectural styles, and its cafes and bars are frequented and loved by the enthusiastic crowds. Grand and magnificent, the striking star of the district is the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. Distinctly Moorish in style, crowned by the twin onion shaped domes, the Synagogue is the very emblem of District VII and one of the main attractions in the capital.

- Sara SSchaerbeek, Belgium191 contributionsTypical Hungarian Kindness and HekpfulnessI didn't stay there honestly but evryone I spoke to adored it. I had a problem with an airport transfer and the staff at reception could not have been nicer. Looking at the hotel from the groundfloor, the rooms are built round a central corridor, ablaze with light and the foyer is astonishing. One day I may be able to stay there. It is so central, beautiful and the New York Café is next door. Hopefully many contributors will have visited by next yearVisited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 1, 2023
- Penny F51 contributionsAmazing venue, worth visitingWhat an amazing place to visit. The architecture is just amazing and it’s such a lovely place to visit. The food was good quality, three of us had soup & one cake, as well as fruit tea, tea & Aperol spritz. Service was not the quickest but we were in no hurry so suited us. Prices are high but this reflects the venue & reputation of the venue. Had to queue for about 20 minutes to get in but it was worth the wait in the rain. Would recommend visiting & if I’m ever back in Budapest would definitely visit again.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 1, 2023
- Tahr19Province of Leinster, Ireland45 contributionsNiceWe did not have to wait in queue and we walked straight in and got seated. We ordered the New York hot chocolate and cake for €24. Overall it is incredibly expensive but if you share a beverage and a cake it is worth the experience as the building and decor is incredibly beautiful. There was live music being played in the background which was enjoyable. Overall I would recommend but don’t bother if there is large queues.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 1, 2024

The decor and artwork on the ceilings and walls is amazing. Much larger variety of food than expected. - J7CorvallisCorvallis, Oregon33 contributionsA truly grand hotel experience.A grand hotel with fantastic rooms. Ours, Room 107, has 3 large windows overlooking the street below. The bedroom area was huge. A separate living area, foyer with closets and drawers and a bathroom with bathtub and shower. The restaurant architecture is spectacular, and the restaurant serves a superb breakfast with a buffet and menu items; high tea and dinner. The hotel provides limo service from the airport with at least 3 e-cars available. 5 Stars!Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 22, 2024

The New York Cafe in Budapest certainly lives up to its reputation as a stunning historical venue, with an ambiance that transports you to a bygone era of opulence. However, potential visitors should be aware that the cafe has a unique seating policy. To secure a table, there is a mandatory charge, payable through what they call a 'fast line' service, which is effectively the only way to gain entrance.
For those who prefer a more straightforward cafe experience without additional fees for seating, Budapest offers a wealth of charming alternatives. There are numerous spots throughout the city where you can enjoy a coffee and traditional Hungarian pastries in beautiful settings, sometimes accompanied by live music, without the need for advance payment. These cafes might better align with the expectations of those looking to savor the local culture in a more relaxed, spontaneous fashion.

We came here on a recommendation. The queue wasn’t that bad at all, but when we got in we were seated at a tatty plastic table, with uncomfortable uncushioned chairs.
We weren’t near the door but we could hear it unceremoniously slam every time someone came in.
They took our order quickly, but oddly us and everyone around us were served food (dessert) immediately but had to wait so long we’d finished our food before we got any drinks!
We went to the bathrooms and they only had 2 ladies toilets for a huge place, so the queue was massive. We then witnessed a proper shouting/screaming match between the cleaning staff in front of the whole queue of customers.
When we paid the person said ‘cash or card’ before bringing us the bill. When I said we need to know how much first he just repeated ‘cash or card’ at me.
The lack of care and attention and basic service reflects the fact that they know tourists like us will come and pay regardless. Go to one of the many lovely coffee shops instead! The only positive point is the decor, which I wouldn’t pay 16000 forint for a photo of.

Beutiful hotel in the centre of Budapest. The room was very clean, comfortable and quiet. The personal polite and obliging. Especially we were happy with the highly professsional service of the front desk manager Mrs.Alua Abdykarim.

The interior is impressive and I assume that's why you pay the premium for food and drink. The strudel we ordered came out cold, and the hot chocolate was like school canteen custard chocolate, neither of us could actually finish the drinks and they weren't nice. Shame as they cost €10 each. Service was extremely slow, despite there being many staff members. Waited over 15 minutes for the bill to arrive.

We had the most amazing and enjoyable stay back in February Everyone was very professional and attentive. First I arrived a bit early in the hotel and I was waiting for my friend to arrive. I didn`t have to wait long for the room. I am sorry I don`t remember the name of the host, but he remembered my surname and when I was checking out he still remembered it, how personalized that was, wonderful
there are a lot of amenities in the rooms, just everything you might need for a short city break.
Food was delicious. I remember we wanted to have some cocktails at the bar, i love Margarita and they made a very good one for me .
the breakfast buffet had a lot of options, but what made us very happy was the juices of the day, everyday was a different flavor. we managed to get a table in New York Cafe very fast and without the need to book it .

The destination is truly captivating, a masterpiece of its own, yet the hospitality leaves something to be desired. The staff doesn't quite exude a warm demeanor, giving the impression of being rather swamped. The desert and coffee was fine.

We stayed three nights at this lovely hotel before our river cruise, and staying here may have been the highlight of the entire trip.
Without doubt, this is a stunningly beautiful building, especially the breakfast and cafe area. The exterior is also magnificent. Our room was spacious and the bed extremely comfortable. Rooms in the historic old building appear similar to those in the new, but have higher ceilings. Breakfasts were superb (make sure you book breakfast included), with a wide-ranging buffet plus cooked to order. I highly recommend their version of eggs benny.
But the best part of all may be how the staff made us feel. I can't say enough about the large serving staff of mostly young people. Genuinely friendly, ever-present without being obtrusive, they certainly made my wife and I feel like very special guests.
If I were to be a character written into a novel, who ends living for an extended time in a grand hotel (A Gentleman in Budapest?), this is where I would want to be.
It was a joy to stay here.

I’ve already left a review for the Anantara New York Palace Hotel that now presently occupies this building (please see separately), so now I’ll focus on the building/property itself.
I’ve left an average rating (matching my rating for the hotel on the other listing), not because the building itself is average…in fact, far from it. But I didn’t want people to confuss by review of the building (which is clearly 5 star) with my review of the hotel (clearly is 3 star)…or worse, have the hotel think that a positive review here offsets less favorable feedback elsewhere.
Definitely, this building is worth a pop-in visit. It is over the top in its opulence and, to their credit, Anantara has done an amazing job with maintaining/restoring the hotel while modernizing it across all areas.

I am planning to have lunch at New York Palace Café since this is nearby the accommodation I book. But I wonder if this is too rush to have lunch and walk around the café within 1 hr 30 mins as planning to have free day tour from St. Stephen’s Basilica after that

A bit confused , I see what appears to be the same property but is referred to as the Boscolo and the New York Palace. Are they one in the same?
Written April 27, 2018
Hi Jeff the Boscolo is the hotel in which the New York Palace cafe is situated.
I took my wife there last December for lunch and it was very atmospheric and fun. Just make sure you book ahead to avoid having to queue with the crowds. Service can be slow at busy times so think about when you would like to go. Well worth a visit while in the city.
