It was kind of fun to see Reagan's statue in Liberty Square. There was also one of George Bush Sr, but we weren't quite sure. We are guessing it is because he was Reagan's vice president. If you ask the people of Eastern Europe who there favorite US president is, many will say Ronald Reagan as he is associated with the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. That act was a ripple effect in east Europe.

We thought we were imagining it when we first saw the statue of Ronald Reagan. Why on earth would Budapest have a monument to an ex-Hollywood star from America? The answer is obvious when you think about it as they were a big support during the Cold War and they also have a neighbouring statue of Jimmy Carter.

It just shows the diversity of this excellent city and makes for a very interesting photo opportunity. Have your picture taken with old American presidents!

It was nice to see the statue of such a great man being honoured in Budapest. He was most instrumental in having the Berlin Wall demolished, which in turn was a key to many former member states of the USSR achieving independence once again.

Why an American President having a statue in Budapest? He never visited Budapest during his US presidency but Hungarians would like to show their appreciation of his effects in ending the Cold War which put an end to the USSR influence on Hungary.

The location of this statue is very interesting. It legitimately faces the US embassy but at the same time it also looks directly to the monument commemorating the Red Army. Funny, isn't it?

One of the things you can see at Liberty Square (Szabadsag) is the Statue of US President Ronald Reagan, attractively standing before the dome of Parliament in the background.

The statue was sculpted by Hungarian artist Istvan Mate and inaugurated in 2009. It is 2.13 metres (7 ft) tall and shows Reagan walking with intent. His facial and physical features resembling the President during his years in office (1981-1989), during which period he is often credited with playing a key role in the fall of Communism which had gripped much of central and eastern Europe during the Cold War period of the 20th century.

At Liberty Square you can also see the liberation monument dedicated to the Soviets who lost their lives liberating the city during WWII. Impressive buildings are also found on the square including the Art Nouveau style - Hungarian National Bank.

Yes, Hungary as a free democratic country again and Budapest a great city, largely because of Ronald Regan. In his June 12, 1987 speech to the people of West Berlin, President Ronald Regan said “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! . . . As I looked out a moment ago from the Reichstag, that embodiment of German unity, I noticed words crudely spray-painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner: "This wall will fall. Beliefs become reality." Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall. For it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom.

And I would like, before I close, to say one word. I have read, and I have been questioned since I've been here about certain demonstrations against my coming. And I would like to say just one thing, and to those who demonstrate so. I wonder if they have ever asked themselves that if they should have the kind of government they apparently seek, no one would ever be able to do what they're doing again.”

Ronald Regan was extremely instrumental in bringing freedom to Central/Eastern Europe. Thus it is very fitting to have this bronze statue of a great man in Budapest’s Liberty Square [Szabadság Square].

In light of Ronald Regan’s significant contribution to ending the Cold War and bring freedom to millions, I have to rate this as “Excellent.”

Happened upon this statue when coming from the Parliament. Totally surprised. Reagan is facing the only Communist monument still left in the city. He is honored here as helping to free the Hungarian people from Soviet occupation. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

The Hungarians consider Reagan a local hero since he was strongly instrumental in freeing them from the Russian Communist oppression. Both hands and his coat are shiny from admirers touching his statue. When we were there there were lines of people waiting to take pictures with him - very touching and moving

The statue is a tribute to Ronald Reagan's role in bringing an end to the Cold War. At its unveiling, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban praised Reagan's wise leadership in bringing about the changes and successfully preserving peace.

The statue of the significant American president Ronald Reagan. It is situated close to the American embassy where Hungarian cardinal József Mindszenty stayed for 15 years during the communist era.
