About
The Holocaust Memorial Center is a national institution established by the Government in 1999. In 2002, it decided to construct the building of the Center in Pava Street, outside of the traditional Jewish quarter, further emphasizing its national character. The Holocaust Memorial Center is one of the few institutions in the world, established by the state, that focuses entirely on Holocaust research and education. The visitors are welcomed into a unique space that was named as the most impressive in Budapest, beside the city's panorama itself by Frank Owen Gehry, one of the leading architects in our time. The modern building is organically linked to the Pava Street Synagogue, an authentic venue that once used to be the second largest site for Jewish worship in Budapest. The Institution is a center for scientific research education and culture. It welcomes visitors with interactive permanent and special periodic exhibitions, experience-based museum pedagogical programs and cultural performances. Guided tours are available in five languages and special, thematically focused tours are offered regularly. A bookshop and a cozy coffee shop contribute to a memorable visit.

A must for any visit to Budapest
This is the most impressive and impactful holocaust memorial I have visited, high quality venue and tells the story in a clear, educational and impactful way. Very moving. I highly recommend this as a must attend attraction

    Very worthwhile visit
I liked the way this museum presented the story through the eyes of families. The exhibition is very wordy but very well written. All panels have Hungarian and English and the audio sections also have an English option. A harrowing subject well presented. Take a coat - this is a cold experience. We were warned!

Harrowing information but worthy of reminding us
Paid at the door ,discounts for over 62. Very reasonable cost about £5 each.Cloakroom available no charge. Security bag search at exit to be expected. All staff very friendly. Informative history of the Hungarian Jews experience of the Holocaust. Even though we have visited the death camps the museum was an eye opener.

A must-see place for duty of remembrance
An important place to visit, with a beautiful synagogue. Everyone was really friendly, and as a student I even got a discount, which I didn't know about but the receptionist offered to me straight away. Each room is filled with information, pictures, videos, and extremely instructive. I went there during the week so I was completely alone, but I think it made the experience even more meaningful to me. Do be warned, if you for some reason intend to go there with children/young teenagers, that in the last room, there is an uncensored video. I found it important to see, but it could make quite the impression on them, so simply be careful about that.

Been to a few historical museums in my time, and really looked forward to visiting this one. However, as emotive as the subject matter is....this felt like a copy and paste museum. Picture boards, videos and panel information that is already available on the internet and I had seen it all before. Nothing new to learn, although the displays at the end of possessions of some of the victims of the Holocaust at the end was pretty powerful. Is it worth a visit? I suggest if you know your history, then you will have seen and read it all on the internet and seen similar already in other museums and it will not be worth visiting. If that's not the case, then by all means go and be enlightened.

So moving, taught me things I didn't know. Hard to read and watch the images and understand why this happened. I didn't know the gypsy population were also persecuted. Such a sad part of our history and these museums are needed to make sure it doesn't occur again.

This memorial centre is deeply personal, with individual stories used to bring the tragic story of Hungary’s Jewish population vividly to life. To do justice to this memorial, one needs time - lots of it. Congratulations to the Centre for highlighting the desperate plight of not only Hungary’s Jewish population, but also it’s Roma - Gypsy - one.

Set in a lovely purpose-built building, incorporating a beautiful synagogue, the exhibitions were both moving and superbly presented.
I learnt so much more about the brutality and inhumanity of the holocaust, relating particularly to Hungarian Jews. There was no attempt to excuse the actions of the anti-semitic government and the collaboration of local officials.
This is fantastic value for money and a must for everyone who wants to get to the unvarnished truth about this blot on European history.

Spent a few hours in this centre today - about the Jewish & Romany people in Hungary before and during WW2. Very well presented (can follow the lives of several families all through the period), Very provocative and really makes one think, to say the least.
Well worth the visit

Housed in and below an early 1900's synagogue the Holocaust Memorial Center is a national institution built by the Hungairian Government in 2002. Focused on Holocaust research and education with design by Frank Gehry the Institution offers moving words from victims' families plus horrific footage telling a terrible history of Hungary's involvement. Guided tours are available, though exhibits are offered in Hungarian or English.

the museum is very nice and easily reached by bus. Inside, images and tales of the history of the Jews and the tragic epilogue that we all know but must always remember. During the visit you also enter a Synagogue. Worth a visit for our culture and heart

A space often forgotten by tourists who visit the city but which deserves our attention. It's impressive! It's worth the visit. It's surprising what we don't know about the Holocaust until we visit this museum. I recommend at least two hours for the visit.
