- LuckyScolesLos Angeles, California8 contributionsSurprising piece of art sculpture in a Budapest park. Loved it!Love Budapest. My 3rd trip there and highly recommend. This was my first to this park where I came across a statue called Anonymus. At first I thought it was the Grim Reaper because the face is shrouded and dark and hard to see. But evidently it is a scribe from the 11th century and the statue was sculpted in 1907. I took several photos but my favorite is the close up of his face under his shroud. - FabianoItabira, MG2,743 contributionsUnusual statue in the City Park!An unusual bronze statue made by Miklós Ligeti, near the Agricultural Museum, in the City Park. It is difficult to take a picture alone, as it is surrounded by tourists who want to pass the pen for luck. Anonymus lived in the twelfth century (his true identity is unknown) and wrote the chronicle Gesta Hungarorum (Hungarian works).Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2024
- Aidan R77 contributionsMysterious and StrikingTucked away in City Park, this cloaked figure is both eerie and captivating. No face, no identity—just this shadowy figure holding a pen, and somehow, it pulls you right in. There’s something about it that feels ancient, like a ghost of history just standing there waiting to spill secrets. You walk up to it, and it’s like you’re in the presence of something bigger than you, something timeless. Tourists come and go, but this statue? It stands there with that mysterious aura, not giving anything away. The legend says touching the pen will give you writing genius. Now, whether that’s true or not, I’ll leave it up to you, but it adds a cool little twist to the experience. It’s simple, yet powerful. Definitely worth the stop if you’re strolling through the park.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 10, 2024
- SavoirVivreGermany2,680 contributionsWho could that be?Very popular photo motif in the capital of Hungary. The statue of Anonymous is a bronze sculpture by the Hungarian sculptor Miklós Ligeti from 1903. It ‘honours’ the hitherto unknown author of the Gesta Hungarorum, a chronicle of the Magyars from their settlement in the Danube Plain in 896 to the Middle Ages. It shows Anonymous as a hooded figure with a book in one hand and a pen in the other, and is located in front of Vajdahunyad Castle, a historical complex that houses the Agricultural Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 23, 2024

The statue of Anonymous, 1.9 meters high, is located in the Vajdahunyadvár area of Városliget, opposite the gate of the Agricultural Museum, and has been completed since 1902. The life of the modeled Hungarian historical figure is still full of unknown places. He is bound to Béla.

Cool monument. He turned out to be very eloquent, even a little sinister. I became interested, and at the same time I learned that Anonymous is not only a common noun.
And about the fulfillment of desires for those who rubbed their pens - this is at the level of a joke. I don’t think anyone takes these “signs” seriously. It’s just such a tourist tradition, in every city you rub something))

It's a great statue near Vajdahunyad Castle. The design makes it far more striking than many other statues in Budapest which are designed with beauty in mind, whereas this, has a completely different feel. No less beautiful in its own way, but no other statue made me uncomfortable haha

The Anonymus statue in the grounds of Vajdahunyad Castle is just a short walk from Heroes Square and one I would highly recommend doing as a joint effort. The statue itself is quite a dark and ominous looking one.
The identity of the actual man has always been subject to debate by many scholars but the most likely is that the man was a notary to a king in Hungary. The constant debate and uncertainty surrounding the identity has left the man simply known as "Anonymus".
The statue itself is quite a dark looking thing, especially when getting up close and looking into the eyes. Be sure to check it out when in the area.

It is located in the Vaindahuniand Castle there in the park. She is holding a pen and our guide told us that the legend says if you touch it you will learn the secrets of the one you love. I read elsewhere that it's luck.. Whenever everyone says something different..

This statue never ceases to amaze me, even after visiting it so many times.
It is enigmatic, beautiful, almost magical-looking, and it is BY FAR Budapest's best looking statue.
Don't miss a selfie with it.

This famous statue is located in Városliget near Vajdahunyad Castle, just walking distance from Heroes' Square. It's worth a visit, because it's an unusual statue of a notary of King Béla. (from 12-13 century). The statue was made in 1903 by Miklós Ligeti a young sculptor. It's a bit ominous and mysterious but I like it and visit it when I'm in Budapest.

This rather sinister statue is my favorite in the park. It is of the most widely quoted person in the world.
The real Anonymous lived in the 12th century and his true identity is fittingly unknown, but he is believed to have been a notary of Béla III of Hungary, who wrote the chronicle Gesta Hungarorum (Deeds of the Hungarians).

Arriving in Vajdahunyad Castle you can not, not see three beautiful statues. Especially Art aficionados could enjoy the sculptures of Winston Churchill and George Washington. Both, surprisingly, made it through the Cold War unscathed. But the most famous statue is the statue of a monk, sculpted in 1903 by Miklós Ligeti. Very little is known about this monk whose name is even unknown, so he is now referred to as Anonymus (Latin for anonymous). This mysterious monk lived in the twelfth century as the notary of King Béla III. He is credited as the writer of the first book of the Hungarians, the 'Gesta Hungarorum'. Touching the monk's stylus is supposed to bring good luck with your studies. It is amazing. You can feel its strength. Valuable visit.

The author of the first chronical of the Hungarians .. in the 12 century "Anonymous" wrote "Gesta Hungarorum" - the "Deeds of the Hungarians" , as translated from Latin.
Now this being said - in the courtyard of the Vajdahunyad Castle in the Varos Liget park in Budapest you can find this statue.
I will not get into a history lesson here and the link to the king Bela III of Hungary - bottom line is the statue is depicting the character with his hood on - and without a face, hence he is keeping his anonymity and since even the scholars can not agree upon his identity , it is better to keep it this way.
The statue is a landmark of the city and typically is always surrounded by tourists so you need to wait a bit to take some pics.
And the "writing tool" - nothing like in the 12th century, but more modern looking - in the hand of the statue is shining bright since it is supposed to bring good luck if you rub it.
Overall definitely worth stopping for a few pics.

Hi, just because you seem to be interested in culture, please, allow me inform you that this statue is of the Hungarian Anonymus - not the Polish one. He was the notary of the Hungarian king, Béla III. See wikipedia
