It became apparent pretty quickly that there was not and would not be enough time. Not in Budapest and not with the guide who seemed to know just how to introduce us to a lovely, layered place. Máté was fantastic. He has a bit of the hapless professor in him which is a charming quality when you're learning about a completely new place. He clearly loves Budapest and that meant getting pieces of the city's very rich history through the eyes of a natural storyteller. I also loved that he was willing to give that history context by juxtaposing it with some of the newer traditions cropping up in old quarters (ie the concept of the "ruin bar," independent shops and the people behind them). I got the impression that he knew where he wanted to take us and what we needed to see but was flexible enough to let the tour meander a bit. In that way it never felt regimented or rehearsed. The end result was that we all walked away gushing and then promptly sat down for a great lunch at a bakery he'd recommended (Vostro). I started joking that I would start looking for reasons to come back to Budapest for work and then surprised myself when I realized that I wasn't actually kidding. A lot of the credit for that kind of response obviously belongs to the city itself. It's an incredibly interesting place and if a city can have a sense of irony, Budapest definitely does. But a certain amount of credit also goes to the tour because in the end it felt like being introduced to someone I immediately liked, by another friend who seemed to know us both.

My friends and I found this tour through a New York Times article and were incredibly pleased with the tour. It began on the steps of the national museum and wound through some great neighborhoods on the Pest side of the city. We loved Mate, our guide who tailored our walk to our interests-- food, coffee, art, and interesting cultural facts. My only suggestion is that the tour should end where it starts bc it was a little confusing getting back to the beginning. Otherwise, an amazing tour I would highly recommend!

If you want to see sites that you can't find on your own using tour books, this is the company for you. We visited the square that was the center for the uprising against the Russians, a blacksmith's shop that could have been in a Dickens' novel, a gypsy family, little temples in peoples' homes that Jews used during the communist error and still use today, and buildings ravished by the war, including one that contained hatch marks recording each bomb as it landed on Budapest. The guides are very knowledgeable, eager to tell the history and answer questions. We went on three of their tours and could easily have taken three more.

I dont really understand how this company works, as they do not respond to e-mails (except the first one, with two days delay), and their only phone number listed on their website is unreachable for several days now.

Big letdown, as I wasted several valuable days waiting for their reply, while I could have started organizing the tour with someone else.

Luckily there are other companies with similar profile, who pick up the phone, give you advise on which option suits you best, and are flexible, just like service providers should be.

NOT RECOMMENDED, look for others!

Adam was our tour guide of Budapest. He was a delightful young man whose love for his city was infectious. We learned so much about the city - its history, its architecture, and its people. The visit the gypsy home was interesting, but I would have preferred seeing more of the city. As we were beginning a Viking River Cruise, we thought we would have more of an overall tour of the city with that group, so Beyond Budapest offered a different approach to learning about the city. We enjoyed it.

We chose the socio-cultural walking tour, with a french friend, visiting Budapest for the 4th time, and a Hungarian, living in Budapest. Both of us had an amazing time, discovering the non-touristic but beautiful parts of the city.

We visited some really nice palaces, had interesting stories about them.
Then we got to a Gipsy musician’s family home, very welcoming, presenting their way of living in an adorable way.

Our guide, Adam, who speaks a perfect french, shared all his stories in a professional, and enthusiastic way, that he made our tour just perfect.
Thanks again, hope to participate in a different tour soon :)

We always try to find a way to learn about the culture of the places we visit so were very intrigued by the title of this tour in Budapest. We loved the tour! Our guide Adam who speaks perfect English gave us some info on the history of Hungary and Budapest, showing us palaces and squares to illustrate his points, then we visited a family of Gypsy musicians in their home who were very warm and welcoming to us. The best part of the tour was our guide - so full of joy and so happy to share his Budapest with us! Recommended!
