- Lori MVictoria, Canada93 contributionsKeleti Station and TaxiOlder train station..station is nice but… We arrived into the train station and needed to get to our hotel, which was maybe 4 km away. We walked out toward the back of train station where taxis were lined up. We were thinking of possibly taking a taxi to our hotel, which was not far, about 12 minutes. The taxi drivers wanted cash only and quoted 25 euros (36.00 CA) at time of writing… We did some research and ended up going back to the front of the train station and across the street to a bus ticket machine to buy a bus pass, Which we used for the rest of the day. And we took the bus, about 4 /5 stops and were in easy walking to our hotel. Check out the. Budapest bus tickets, you can get a group 24 hour day pass for up to 5people for about 5000. huf….= about 20CA at time of writing ... For 24 hours, for all of you. On our departure from the hotel to airport which was near the Chain bridge we booked a cab from our hotel to airport… which was over 42 minutes travel time… and we paid near the same fare the taxis were charging to go from Kelelti to hotel.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- Romy94Austria45 contributionsWellSo from the outside the station building looks beautiful, only the appearance is somewhat deceptive. I have never seen such a confusing station, we have 3 (!!!) Find out which platform we are allowed to board minutes before the scheduled departure. Of course, the chaos was inevitable.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 29, 2024
- Eva D2 contributionsVIP lounge at Keleti BudapestBought 1st class ticket on Trainline from Budapest to Vienna for five of us. 2nd class cost £103, 1st class cost £146. It was worth paying as all of us gained entry to the VIP lounge. It was worth paying as we received excellent service and free breakfast. We will definitely use this service as it is de-stressing the whole journey.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 30, 2024
- Michel AMuids, France16 contributionsVery nice train stationA nice train station very well restored because well damaged during the last war. The restaurant is unfortunately closed but there are still beautiful pictures from the period. To visit for history and interior very well restored.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2024
- KellyansapansaAdelaide, Australia460 contributionsA functional train station in a beautiful old buildingWe came from Australia to visit family in Hungary, and went to this station to catch a train to Lillafured. The station building is very grand on the outside, but the interior is quite dreary and functional, except for the beautiful paintings in the departure hall which are worth a look. There are basic amenities in the station including kiosks mainly selling alcohol and bakery items. The station is close to the tram and easy to get to. It's not a big station so it was easy to find our platform and train.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 10, 2025

The Keleti Train Station is the largest station in Budapestand and is located very close to Budapest’s city centre.
The building was constructed in eclectic style somewhere between 1881 and 1884 and is of interesting architecture. We found it clean and easy to get around.
As a first class passenger on Railjet we had access to the lounge which served some nice snacks and drinks and made our wait for the train comfortable.

Despite undergoing what seems to be a major refurbishment we were very impressed with the station and the history contained. Large part of it were cordoned off but you can still see enough to know this has been an amazing place over the years.
Be careful as it is huge so you need to make sure you establish which exit you need on arrival. The taxi drivers have a reputation here for being unlicensed and dodgy. To that end we booked ahead with city cars who were waiting for us and we had a clean and easy exit into the city.
As you do exit, make sure you have your camera ready to get some photographs of this wonderful building

Budapest Keleti (eastern) railway station is the main international and inter-city railway terminal in Budapest. It is the easternmost of the city's rail stations, and the terminus of rail lines from eastern Hungary, Transylvania, and the Balkans. The building is eclectic in style (by architects Gyula Rochlitz and János Feketeházy), and started service in 1884. Keleti Station was severely damaged during both World Wars, but was rebuilt and is listed as a protected heritage building in 1988. The main façade is is flanked by two statues (James Watt and George Stephenson). Above them, nearly 32 meters above the ground, stands the towering figure of Steam, born from the deities of Water and Fire. The interior was renovated in 2008, and reflects the neo-Classical style of the late 19th century. Inside, the great hall features frescoes by Karoly Lotz. Like most large European train stations, Keliti offers ticket counters, lounges, restaurants, cafes, left luggage, ATMs, with hotels and more restaurants nearby. Keleti is open 24/7 and is served by taxis, buses, trams and Metro line M2 and M4.

The capital city station of Hungary is a beautiful building when viewed from the outside, seen from the main entrance. Unfortunately, on closer inspection, it reveals that it is in greater need of renovation. At the side exit, the facade was rather plainly designed or in a rather plainer state. We were also not sitting in the main hall, but in the side area. The hygienic conditions here were rather poor. For your information: the toilet costs 200 HUF...at Nyugati station it is 300 HUF, 1€ or 1.25 dollars ;) ; Perhaps the "flagship" of the Hungarian railway should be completely renovated after all.

We arrived following a journey on the night train. The luggage storage/info man was SO HELPFUL - he got change, put the bags in lockers, gave us info etc (not just us, everyone we saw). He went above and beyond! I don't know who he is but he deserves some praise. He set us up for a successful visit to Budapest, I can't say enough positive things about his service.
Station itself is clean and easy to navigate.

Probably the scariest station I've ever had the misfortune to travel through. The minute you get off the train you can spot the scammers/muggers sizing up the latest arrivals. We booked a cab through the hotel, so didn't get skelped by the taxis outside. Horrible place, unfortunately a taster of the rest of Budapest.....

Arrival rail station for many visitors. Convenient taxi ride to downtown. Nice old-fashioned rail station but this one has not been restored. In need of serious woodworking and paint. Take care: taxis take only cash and ATM machine charges an exhoribant rate.

Started off with the hop on hop off bus tour which showed you all the sites to see. We went on a night time boat cruise which is best as everything is then lit up. We also went to the Szechenyi Baths for a half day these were fantastic, I believe there were 27 different pools of different sizes and temperatures. The Citadel, Old Town, Houses of Parliament are all worth a visit. The food and drink in the restaurants was good and probably cheaper than in Britain.

REALLY bad. My reservation was changed to a later train without any notification to me. I only found out at the third office I inquired at. Friendly professional person at the customer inquirys, surly unhelpful dismissive at international tickets. Long wait at international tickets, uninformed staff not inclined to help.
The station is large and sprawling, little information is given in any other language than Hungarian, and information services are located far apart.

Stressful
It can be done so much better, do fix it.

Huge train station with undoubted Soviet design. Links all over the country as well as internationally. Easy to navigate around, connects to the MTR and trams/bus. Tons of F&B nearby. Ticket booths, and if needed, ticket counters.

The 1880s Keleti Station has not been updated in a long time, so I am not sure how equipped they are for wheelchairs. They do mention on their website that they DO accommodate people in wheelchairs and help with getting on trains. I know this train station has a tourist office inside and that is where you should seek assistance according to the website. I don't know if you can request help in advance online and may have to do so once you arrive. Best wishes.

I will be traveling by train from Budapest to Bratislava. I know that I will start at Keleti station in Budapest and I think that I will end up at the Hlavná stanica", station in Bratislava. Is this correct?
I am new to train travel in Europe and am nervous since I do not speak the language. I am not sure how to go about and purchase the ticket. I would prefer to purchase in advance if that is possible.
I would be most appreciative if someone can provide advice. Thanks.

Are there lockers available to store luggage for the day? and is the cafe open at 10pm. Thanks so much!!
Written June 10, 2018
Lockers are located in a room near the buffer stops at the near end of platform 9. There are large and small lockers, most accepting Forint coins, a few accepting euro coins. There is a change machine if you only have Forint notes. There is an ATM for cash withdrawals right next to the internet ticket collection machine.
A good place to wait for your train over an inexpensive meal, coffee or beer in grand surroundings inside the station is the Baross restaurant in the corner near the buffer stops on platform 6, usually open 8am to 8pm, credit cards accepted.
The First class lounge is open until 9:30 pm. I don't know about the other coffee and food stands.
