A wonderful building...
Jan 2020
...but it's under reconstruction perhaps for the whole of 2020. The Opera shows happen in another building with great acoustics but not close as beautiful as this one. Worth going inside and seeing the halls and rooms which are open to the public while reconstruction takes place.

One day, this place will re-open...
Mar 2020
The scaffolding around the Hungarian State Opera House has been taken down, but the work in it has been interrupted by the COVID epidemic. We had the chance to see their superb shows at the Erkel theatre. Still amazing, although the building there is very sterile.

A sumptuous neo-Renaissance hall showcasing the arts
May 2019
The Hungarian State Opera House is on Andrássy út. The large neo-Renaissance building (designed by Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl) opened to the public in 1884, funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary. It is the second largest opera house in Budapest and in Hungary. Unfortunately, when I visited, its neo-Renaissance exterior was shrouded in scaffolding as part of a major refurbishment project. I found the interior dazzling: mosaics in the entry foyer were flanked by marble columns; the vaulted ceiling had murals depicting the nine Muses; wrought-iron lamps illuminated the wide stone staircase. In the 19th century, the magnificent surroundings must have made going to the opera a social experience to remember.

Just A Taste Of Magnificent Building
Feb 2020
Knew that the building was closed for refurbishment but still went on the limited areas tour which gave just a taste of the magnificence of the building. Highlight for me was the five minute concert on the staircase which was mesmerising. Will definitely return to watch a performance when it reopens. Its now on my bucket list!

Tour of opera house
Feb 2020
The state opera house is under a long refurbishment programme, but we decided to do the restricted tour that was available for the same price. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and the parts that were accessible were amazing. The icing on the cake was a 10 minute mini opera performed on the grand staircase to recompense us for the reduced tour time. We got goosebumps, it was incredible, and we were allowed to film it. The refurbishment is well behind schedule, and there doesn’t seem to be a finish date, but it is still worth the visit.

Perfection!!!
Nov 2019 • Friends
Before the closure of the "Népszínház" in Budapest, it was the third largest opera building in the city; today it is the second largest opera house in Budapest and in Hungary.

Reconstruction
Dec 2019
I believe that Opera is really beautiful, but during my time in Budapest was reconstruction there, so Opera was closed and I can see only the front part of building.

21st February 20 - the opera house was boarded up and had scaffolding and boarding around it - so cant even get a picture of the outside of the building.
