The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

The Fisherman’s Baston is a must see while in Budapest. A beautiful structure with beautiful views. It does cost money to climb up, but use the QR codes and pay online to save you some time. The most annoying thing was all the influencers taking picture after picture causing lines and crowds, but this is such a pretty site, you can’t really blame them.

This famous landmark is situated on the Buda side of the river. We were staying in the Hilton hotel which is immediately adjacent to it so not far to venture to see this impressive structure. Many of the balconies and towers have no charge to enter but if you want to go up to the upper terraces and towers there is a small fee of approximately £3 per person. Other nearby places of interest include Matthias church and the statue of St Stephen on horseback. The views across the River Danube to the Parliament Building and across the city are stunning so this is a place well worth visiting.

Can't beat the views, the facade, the church, the whole castle district is sublime. My only complaint is how capitalism has gotten its claws in. The upper area is roped off unless you pay, and while the views from the lower section are almost exact, its that kind of thing that sours places like this for me.

The walls and towers are known as the Fishermen's Bastion. You don't have to pay to wander around though there is a small charge for a walk on some of the walls, but this is worth paying.

There are refreshment stands, certainly in the summer when I visited. Make sure that you take a camera. The building is beautiful as are the views over Budapest.

We visited around 4pm on a Monday in early March. There was no entry fee at this time to enter the cloisters or climb the ramparts so the barriers were open. At this time the only restricted sections were the restaurants for which access was understandably just for patrons.

There was still plenty to see and we spent a good 30mins looking around the different areas and taking in the breathtaking views.

We took the metro from Parliament Square (Kossuth Lajos Ter) to Batthyany Ter, 1 stop and 350HUF single ticket and climbed up the steps to the top. It’s steep but if you’re fit it’s not a problem. The views are spectacular especially when sunny.
The Fisherman’s Bastion was free to walk along and is so pretty, it’s like a fairytale.
Toilets are around but they are 250HUF.

Defensive walls have been in place here since at least the 9th century. The current structure was built from 1895 to 1902 on the site of what had been 18th Century walls which were part of the defensive system for the castle. The name is said to come from a guild of fishermen who manned this section of the walls.

This is the gathering place in Buda. The structures offer panoramic views of the river and the city of Pest below.

The Halászbástya or Fisherman's Bastion is one of the best known monuments in Budapest and certainly has the best views of the Danube and the "Pest" part of the city. Trinity square contains not only the Bastion but also Matthias Church, the statue of St. Stephen and the Holy Trinity Column.
The Fishermen's Bastion's main façade, parallel to the Danube, is approximately 140 meters long, of which the southern aisle is about 40 meters long, the north is 65 meters long, and the ornate central parapet is 35 meters long. Its seven high-pitched stone towers symbolize the seven chieftains of the Hungarians who founded Hungary in 895.Since 1987 it has been one of Budapest's World Heritage Sites.

Yes its full of tourist exploring, taking photos, and gawping. I wonder why??
This place must be seen to be believed. It is glorious, majestic, and imperious. Once you ascend the climb this opens up a whole wonderful walk with sweeping views across the city.

GO. HERE.

Do not skip, do not look at from across the river, go here. And go here EARLY. Even at 6am there are others around (mostly taking wedding photos or engagement photos) but it is worth getting up early and going. Pro tip, it's also free to go up on the highest walkway if you're there early in the morning!

If you do go later in the day expect lots of people in your photos, but the nearby shops and restaurants will all be open.
