The area
Address
Neighborhood: District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

    Best of the BEST!
ZOLYAN, made this a 6 star review! He navigated us through the mouth watering menu with ease. Finalizing our meal with a bottle of red wine to elevate our experience to a new level. Thank you ZOLYAN for making our first night in Budapest unforgettable.

    Wonderful Location
This is a great location to look across the river to the Pest side and have a fantastic view of the Parliament building. The area includes the Mathias Church, which is a beautiful church inside. There is also a statue of St Stephan in the square.

    Medieval story
Thrilling historical site. Great view from the top of the bastion, spreading all throughout Pest, with the magnificent Parliament in its heart. The Bastion, alongisde the rest of the Buda Castle, takes the visitor back to medieval times and help them become part of its story.

    Amazing Historical Site
Spectacular. The grounds are amazing. Beautiful gardens. The views of Pest are gorgeous. It’s a beautiful historical site with amazing statutory throughout. We were fortunate to catch the changing of the guard as well as guards on hose back.Walking along the upper terrace of the bastion and down the stairs gives you a glorious view of everything It’s a site not to be missed. There were some lovely artisans selling their wares in market on the grounds.

    Beautiful Views
The Halászbástya or Fisherman's Bastion is one of the best known monuments in Budapest and certainly has the best views of the Danube and the "Pest" part of the city. Trinity square contains not only the Bastion but also Matthias Church, the statue of St. Stephen and the Holy Trinity Column. The Fishermen's Bastion's main façade, parallel to the Danube, is approximately 140 meters long, of which the southern aisle is about 40 meters long, the north is 65 meters long, and the ornate central parapet is 35 meters long. Its seven high-pitched stone towers symbolize the seven chieftains of the Hungarians who founded Hungary in 895.Since 1987 it has been one of Budapest's World Heritage Sites.

    Wow!
Yes its full of tourist exploring, taking photos, and gawping. I wonder why?? This place must be seen to be believed. It is glorious, majestic, and imperious. Once you ascend the climb this opens up a whole wonderful walk with sweeping views across the city.

    Beautiful fairytale view
We took the metro from Parliament Square (Kossuth Lajos Ter) to Batthyany Ter, 1 stop and 350HUF single ticket and climbed up the steps to the top. It’s steep but if you’re fit it’s not a problem. The views are spectacular especially when sunny. The Fisherman’s Bastion was free to walk along and is so pretty, it’s like a fairytale. Toilets are around but they are 250HUF.

    A must see in Budapest
Really enjoyed our visit here. Breathtaking views and ability to access a slightly higher platform for even better views for a small fee. Quite high up, we walked it but there are casts tour buses and also escalators available

    enjoyable experience!
Our children loved exploring the castle-like structure and running up and down the stairs. The seven towers and intricate architecture provided plenty of opportunities for them to imagine they were knights and princesses in a fairy tale. Overall, it was a memorable and enjoyable experience for our family. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting Budapest, especially those with children who love history and exploring unique architecture.

    An iconic place in Budapest.
With breathtaking views and a great history, Fisherman's bastion is probably the most iconic landmark in Budapest. It is a stunning Romanesque piece of architecture that has a long terrace with seven towers which overlooks the Danube river and the Pest side. You now have to pay to enter the ramparts to get a view over the city and river which I find is a bit harsh on the tourists. When we went, it was free access so that was good. At the top of the bastion is a café so you cant get in there without having a coffee or drink. This is probably the best viewing area. Go in have a coffee and get the best view. Its also stunning when viewed at night so make sure you go up at night to get a stunning view.

We visited around 4pm on a Monday in early March. There was no entry fee at this time to enter the cloisters or climb the ramparts so the barriers were open. At this time the only restricted sections were the restaurants for which access was understandably just for patrons.

There was still plenty to see and we spent a good 30mins looking around the different areas and taking in the breathtaking views.

We visited the Fisherman's Bastion for our 2nd time on a recent visit to the city for the Christmas markets. Having walked a little while from Vaci utca we found ourselves crossing the Chain Bridge and at the foot of the castle hill. A short walk up the hill and we were at Varhegy. We progressively walked from the castle along the hill to the Fishermans Bastion (roughly 5 mins walk) and immediately we were back in familiar territory at the foot of the Mathias church and looking at the bastion and the glorious views over Pest.

There is a small fee to get up to the upper deck of the bastion of which I would definitely recommend if you have not visited before but on this occasion we didn't but the views from the lower deck over Pest are still fantastic and photo worthy

Halaszbastya or Fisherman's Bastion is one of most known tourists spots in the Budapest. The Turrets and Spires which give it a fairy tale Castle look, the 7 towers representing Chieftains of the Magyars, the Panoramic view of the city, there is so much here to make your day.

Fisherman's Bastion can be easily accessed by public transport or the funicular but I suggest walking all the way up to absorb the experienc step by step. The lower towers and terraces are free and open 24/7 while the upper towers are paid for entry.

A must visit for sheer beauty and historical aura the monument projects to the visitor.

It proudly sits near the river edge so you can’t miss this building. My partner however wasn’t too impressed when I suggested a 5:15 am alarm to get there for sunrise. I wasn’t sure it would’ve been open/accessible (I didn’t tell him that) but it is, it’s totally open with no restrictions by foot. It’s not peak season though so I can’t speak about what would be chargeable etc as there are ticket machine entrance points dotted around. Sunrise was stunning, so worth getting there (about 6) there was a few people there though already, I could hide them or edit them out but if you want it to yourself get there whilst it’s still dark - but then again people will always be there for sunrise no matter what. Sunrise is beautiful due to the reflections on the light/white building stone. You can have food and drink here but I’m unsure what time this opens. What ruins this building is the Hilton literally built on top of it, hard not to get it in pictures and such an ugly building, how it got passed to be built next door puzzles me. Beautiful architecture, very clean and respected area. St Matthias church is next door with amazing roof!!

I visited Budapest in August 2019. I got a combined ticket for the Matyas church and the fisherman's bastion. The ticket was reasonably priced considering these are some of Budapest's most popular tourist attractions. You don't need to pay to walk near the bastion, only to actually go up on the walkway of it, and get an unobstructed view. It's not essential, but I thought given the reasonable ticket price it was worth doing so - I enjoyed the view and got some nice photos.

The Fisherman’s Baston is a must see while in Budapest. A beautiful structure with beautiful views. It does cost money to climb up, but use the QR codes and pay online to save you some time. The most annoying thing was all the influencers taking picture after picture causing lines and crowds, but this is such a pretty site, you can’t really blame them.

You do not need to pay to go up top to get great pictures. We were able to get plenty of photos from various spots along the terrace. It is very crowded here because everyone wants to get pictures here because it is beautiful, so have patience and enjoy.

We went to the fisher mans bastion at around 15:00 - took some pictures of the surroundings. Then we went to the Hospital in the rock museum (which is a guided tour that takes 1 hour) in walking distance from the bastion. After we came out, around 16:30 it was dark. We used the chance to go to the bastion again to enjoy the different and amazing view of the parlament building because it was now all lit up.

So - go here twice if you can, once during the day and once after sunset.

Great views from the 'free' fishermans bastion from the Buda side of the Danube. . Forget the high priced tourist buses and take the 16 or 16A from Deak Ference square.
Budapest has a wonderful supply of buses, trams, trolleybuses and metro lines and the 3 day tourist pass for around £3 a day is a real bargain. Even better if you are over 65. All transport is free. Just show a copy of your passpor, when asked, though most forms of transport didn't even bother!
