Neighborhood: Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.

It has roads and various complexes to get into activities. It's a good place to hang around, have walks and get your bicycle on. Really gets better during summers with the crowd around.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 2, 2024
- TheLinkersModesto, California47 contributionsMargaret Island BudapestThis was my favorite place to visit in Budapest. We walked there and back from our hotel which was over 10 miles. The island is rich in history. It is named after a princess that was given to a convent as an offering to God so that invaders would leave and peace would return. Sit, listen and watch the dancing water fountain, walk the beautiful gardens, see medieval ruins, and eat at one of the many eateries. Lots to see and do. There is a thermal bath house that we did not use, but looked inviting.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024
- Kati S351 contributionsVery nice big parkThe park is much bigger than we thought and there is a lot to discover. Unfortunately, when we were there it was not yet in bloom and it was out of season, so all the restaurants were still closed. Unfortunately, many of the toilets were closed too. All in all, it was a very nice, cozy park to walk around. There are also buses on the island if the walk is too far for you.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 13, 2024

I was there for a couple of hours and I had the opportunity to walk around the greenery of the island. I recommend it to those who love taking long walks in the parks... because to me it seemed like a huge villa in which to go and do sports...Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 13, 2024
- HocicoFrankfurt, Germany25,788 contributionsVery nice walk possibleI found it very nice here at the end of winter/beginning of spring: a few first flowers could already be seen, there wasn't too much going on (i.e. quite quiet), so it was nice to take a walk here. And there's a lot to photograph too: a few old ruins, a few monuments and statues, a few interesting buildings. You can spend a good two hours here without getting bored.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten March 19, 2024

Beautiful old trees and many newly planted ones. A nice sports route for runners. Beautifully laid out and well-kept park. The musical fountain is worth seeing. - BubzizNoerre Asmindrup, Denmark1,648 contributionsAn island of tranquility away from the noise of the big cityMargaret Island is a small island of tranquility located in the middle of the Danube, between Buda and Pest. Margaret Island is a quiet and lush haven in the city. There are footpaths throughout the park area with an art nouveau water tower, the ruins of a 13th century Dominican monastery, a musical fountain and a small zoo. There are jogging paths, thermal baths and swimming pools. There is the courtyard hippieisland where there are bars and restaurants, and sometimes live music. The park has a large selection of different playgrounds and there is plenty of opportunity to settle down in different places in the park. There is plenty of opportunity to play bikes so you can get around the island faster. Margaret Island has an area of 96 ha, and a Max. length: 2.5 km It is therefore easy and affordable to move around, whether on foot or by bicycle. There are a lot of runners on the running path around the island and many runners come from all over the city to do the run around Margaret Island. Fantastic island with ample opportunity for a break from the noise of the big city.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024

It was an easy cycle and we stopped to walk round the small Japanese garden. We didn’t explore the zoo area, just enjoyed the views from the island and found some welcome shade as it was a hot day. There’s places to eat/drink but you’ll need change for the toilets.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 4, 2024

This island is 2.5km long and is the greenest, most beautiful and most visited in the city. Almost every large and modern city has its own "lungs", and in Budapest it is this island. You must put this island on the list of places to visit in the city, but you will have to spend a few hours here, because it is huge and there are many places to visit.
The island is located between Arpad and Margaret Bridges, so you can enter the island from either side. I did it from the side of the Arpad bridge.
The whole island has a lot of greenery and is beautifully decorated. At the beginning there is a "Centenary" monument which is surrounded by many flowers. To walk the whole island along the paths along the river, you will need about 1.5 hours, and from one end to the other about 45 minutes.
The best time of year to visit is from spring to early fall. At the beginning of the island, you will be greeted by the musical fountain, which is the biggest tourist attraction on the island. The fountain got a bigger repertoire in May this year. It runs every day from the end of April to the end of October, and the music and sprinklers make the atmosphere even better. Music is played at certain hours of the day. Next to the fountain there are many benches, where you can sit and enjoy. This island has a lot to offer, for every type of tourist. Here you will see both city residents and tourists enjoying the island together. In order to be able to see the whole island without getting tired, I recommend renting a quad bike and walking around the whole island. I managed to reach only half of the island on foot.
The island has sports fields, a swimming pool, beaches where there are day parties, an amusement park, a Japanese garden, a water tower, a mini zoo, a jogging track, a spa, etc. There are toilets, water fountains and benches throughout the island.
I recommend going up the water tower. That tower was built in 1911 and serves to supply water to restaurants, hotels and bars on the island. Since 2012, tourists have been allowed to climb to the top of the tower, for which an entrance fee is charged.
On the island there is an old church from the 13th century, which was demolished by the Ottomans in the 16th century.

Stunning island with plenty to see. Easily accessible by the city hop on hop off bus or a short walk from the city centre. The fountain performs a music show on the hour which is an experience in itself.
Toilets are 250huf or 1 euro to use so bring change with you.
Plan to spend upwards of two-hours here

Beautiful, clean and special park, if you consider it's on an island and to get there you walk a bridge over the Danube. We visited one of its playgrounds and our kids loved it. The musical fountain was also very nice. The best and cheapest way to move around is to get a BUBI bike from the round about area near the entrance. On our first time there we rented a bike for 4 but didn't really enjoy it. No matter how hard you bike, it won't move any faster so we soon got tired and also didn't move around fast enough to really explore the place. We had a lovely time in nature and a nice break from sightseeing and if we had more time we would probably go there a third time!

As a former citizen of the GDR, I remember that Margaret Island was a popular place to sleep for backpackers on a tight budget in the 80s. During our visit this year, we looked at the Danube Island, which lies between Buda and Pest, and were a little disappointed. It is good to be able to enjoy a bit of green after a few days of walking on cobblestones, but we were not really impressed by the island and its highlights (zoo, monastery ruins, rose garden, Japanese garden). The jogging track is nice, with mostly good surface.

This island is very close to the Parliament surrounded by the Danube, it can be reached on foot (we saw that bus 26 crosses it), at the entrance we rented a pedal cart to go around since we had limited time to do it on foot, we also went in winter but we didn't want to miss it, the rent is 2500 forints 30 minutes and 4000 1 hour, they accept credit cards. The walk was very pleasant, we were able to see all its points of interest, water tower, Dominican ruins, a small zoo (sad), etc. Very few people touched it at the time, but it was green and well maintained. It is an ideal space to have a good time, have a picnic or exercise.

The island is very large and inside there is a very beautiful park to visit, preferably by bicycle given its size.
I recommend renting the bikes made available by the company owned by the city of Budapest. Just download the Mol Bubi application

Island is quite big in a couple of hours we had only seen about a quarter of it though we did spend half our time in a well priced bar Steg. There are a variety of rental vehicles from golf carts to bikes would recommend one of these if you wanted to look around whole island. We spent a bit of a time with a quite impressive fountain that danced to music both classic and more modern.

Margaret Island is located in the middle of the Danube between the districts of Buda and Pest. Walking on sidewalks you can walk through the parks and there is also a jogging track that runs right along the water. Among other things, there is an Art Nouveau water tower, the ruins of a Dominican nunnery from the 13th century. It is also home to a music fountain (not in operation in October 2024) and a small zoo. There is also a thermal and swimming pool with attached hotel, as well as a rose garden and a Japanese garden. In summer, the island offers bars and restaurants as well as outdoor concerts.
The island has a length of about 2.5 km and is about 500m wide. If you want, you can rent bicycles or electric vehicles for a fee.
Tram lines 4 and 6 towards ‘Széll Kálmán tér M’ stop directly at the entrance to the island (stop ‘Margit híd’).
This green oasis is very suitable for a ‘break’.

I liked it very much. Like all of Budapest, super well-kept, clean, green. If you are with children, the musical fountain is nice, which is also pleasant for adults. You spend a couple of hours inside surrounded by greenery. We explored it on foot, there is the possibility of renting bikes, tandems and other 4-wheeled vehicles. Inside there are kiosks for eating, ice cream parlors, the ruins of a convent, a small Japanese garden, many trees, benches, a swimming pool frequented by Hungarians, a zoo from which you can glimpse deer and storks. Maybe in the summer it's a little hot for the walk. A city bus passes inside which we conveniently took to leave the park as it is part of the city transport. It's a park.

Margaret Island is a lovely place to visit and as a public area it is free entrance. It is obviously a place the people of Budapest also enjoy. A quiet place in the middle of Donau between Buda and Pest. You can easily walk around the island and explore places like the ruins of the old monastery or the art nouveau water tower and the Japanese garden. Afterward you can relax by the music water spring or have something to eat or drink. There are many places to choose between. If you like to run - there is an excel at trail around the Island.
There is also thermal Spa a little Zoo ( we did not see this) and sun beds you can use free of charge. It is easy to go to the island either by bus, boat ,bike or simply to walk over the bridge😊I recommend reading a little bit about the Islands history before visiting- it makes it more interesting to see.

Is there a tube station on Margaret Island?
Written October 26, 2019
Not on the island itself, but tram stops on Margaret’s bridge just a few hundred yards from the road to the island. There are various forms of transport once on the island itself though, that you can hire for a few pounds or euros.

Hola. La pista de atletismo del estadio que hay en la Isla Margarita no es de acceso libre, desconozco si cobran por entrar. Como alternativa, existe una pista de asfalto que rodea toda la isla marcada en rojo, paralela al paseo de peatones.
