I think the Island was going a lot of construction work so there wasn't much to do apart from walking. Nice walk along the island edge, good for exercise. There is a Danubius hotel on the Island where we managed to get a hot drink but we couldn't find anywhere else for food/drinks.

Our hotel was directly opposite the island so we made the effort to walk down to the bridge, and go across, and walk the complete length of the island, and then crossing back over the other bridge then back to the hotel. All in all worth the 2 hour walk. Our visit was in winter, and whilst the small free... More

Margaret Island in Budapest is traffic-free and has a dedicated running track around the perimeter measuring 5k. What a community and amazing running experience. You'll need to get the metro to Nyugati Pályaudvar and walk 20 mins from there - across a bridge with amazing views and then to the island. Grab your trainers and get yourself there!

When we visited the Island there were loads of road/ground works the 'cycle' hire didn't tell us, but took our money all the same (not the fault of the Island itself, I grant you). I personally wouldn't make a special trip to go here - under whelmed.

Walk from one end to the other as there are tram stops either end. About 45 minutes to walk without stopping if you want to tick off all the sites/sights. Plenty there for all tastes, from buildings to gardens.

This is definitely a must see in the summer, i'm sure. We went yesterday (5/01) and all attractions were closed and seemed to be a construction site in winter. It was a great walk and the ruins were nice but this will be far better in the summer to visit, I wouldn't waste your time in the winter (Jan).

Visited on New Year's Eve most of the attractions are closed presumably for the winter months, the medieval ruins were interesting and it was a nice place for a walk would like to see it once the refurbishments are complete.

Staying in Margaret Island

Neighborhood Profile
Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.
