For about 80p you get the fun of going on a tram, getting from Parliament Square to Liberty Bridge without walking and seeing one of the most picturesque riverside city views ever! What’s not to love.
Buy the tickets at the machine near the metro stop , they take cash (although didn’t give change) and cards, and validate in the yellow machine on board the tram. The inspectors are visible and frequently check , so make sure that you validate as soon as you get on board.

When doing our research we read that this is the most beautiful tram ride in Europe. I’m not sure about that but it certainly is breathtaking at times and well worth doing.
We were going to get a ticket for the open top bus but found this a cheaper alternative and still loads of fun. We bought a daily pass which allows us to ride any tram around the city for 24 hours so we went to both ends of this line.
It terminates at Parliament Square and we just got off there and explored for ages. Hugs the River Danube and, to that end, to try and get a seat on the river side of the tram. With the windows down you will get some amazing photos.

The cheapest sightseeing tour to jump on a No 2 tram at the first stop in Jászai Mari square and ride till the end of the line, which is Közvágóhíd station. The route of the tram is following the Danube River, and you can see the Parliament House, the Vigadó, the Széchenyi square with the Hungarian Scientific Academy and the new National Theater (What is a libel, and a shame to Hungary and Budapest to have such a messed up building as a National Theatre so better if you don't make any attention to it) and next to it the very interesting house, the Palace of Arts. If you travel on tram No 2, it worth to use it like a hop on hop off bus. If you have a pass, it doesn't cost a single buck to get on and off several times and go to see the above-mentioned edifices. At Xmas time a plus fun, that in the evening the tram has special Christmas lights on it.

Taking tram # 2, especially going north, offers you a view of some of the more beautiful parts of the east bank of the Danube and the buildings along its path, among them the stunning Hungarian parliament. It is a comfortable way to sit and relax, observing everything from a vantage point of a slow-moving tram. At the end of the northbound tram, you can change immediately to the opposite tracks for the southbound one. At the first part of the path, there are great views of the river and the Buda Castle, the Gellert hotel, and baths, but later it passes the less impressive parts of the city. Nevertheless, for practically no cost, it's a great way to get orientated, especially if you are a first-time visitor.

A group of us were taken on a ride one evening. Such a nest way to get around town and very reasonable. You buy tickets at the station then wait for the next one in and we went to the Parliament Building area and got off. Then caught the next one when we were ready to go back. We had a blast as a group trying to put our tickets into the receptacle when we got on. It wasn't the easiest thing but we provided entertainment for all the others in our car as every time we got one in we would cheer. Loads of fun.

My wife and I made extensive use of the Budapest subway system while we were visiting, But we rode on Tram #2 only for sightseeing. We actually rode it both ways, from Parliament all the way south to the end of the line, then back north past Parliament into a residential neighborhood. I love riding on mass transit whenever I visit a new city as it gives a different insight into how the populace lives.
Plus you can't beat the view across the river.

The trams are clean and punctual. We purchased a 24 hour travel ticket which gave us unlimited travel on the trams, metro and buses, great value. It is like a hop on hop off option.

Stops right outside where the river boats dock for staying in the city. Couldn’t find how to buy a 24 hour travel ticket so went to nearest metro station. Make sure you validate the ticket if you don’t choose validate now at purchase. Great views from the tram. We always diy and such good value at £5 each for 24 hours. You can use metro or bus too!

If you want to walk along the river from Hungarian Parliament to Elisabeth bridge but you don’t have time then Tram number 2 is your best alternative. Take a day or time pass and hop-on and off at different stations if you want. We went in June and took tram from Parliment all the way till last stop and then took a return journey.

One of the best pieces of advice I read when researching what to see and do in Budapest was to take a ride on Tram #2. It is so reasonable - costing approximately €1. It was named in National Geographic as one of the top 10 trolley rides in the world. The tram is the most beautiful and panoramic ride traveling along the Danube shores between the Margaret Bridge and south Pest. You will be treated to many historical sites like The Parliament, Gresham Palace, Vigado Concert Hall, and the National Theatre, while also providing the most incredible panorama across the Danube of Castle Hill, Fisherman’s Bastion, Gellert Hill, Chain and Liberty Bridge, and the vast Danube plus so much more. Try to catch the tram in the late afternoon when the city is aglow.

Can you do a return trip on Tram 2 with a single ticket. If we purchase and validate at Fővám tér M then travel the length of the scenic trip and then return when it reaches the end of the line?

From memory, no. You would need 2x single tickets. For a bit more consider the 24 hour travel card (don't confuse with the Budapest Card) - better value and can be used on all public transport. It is about 5x the price of a single ticket.

catch metro M3 from Nyugati to Kelvin ter then walk up Baross utca to Lorinc Pap ter turn left. From outside Nyugati station Metro is underground and daily , weekly or monthly ticket can be purchased from the BKK machines which are purple on top. these tickets are good for trains , trams , trolley bus , bus and the Dona services 11 and 12 all over Budapest and the H train system. If you have trouble finding Baross ask someone at Kalvin for directions.

Hi, an identity card or any other personal identifying document (including the card format driving license) is enough - except funicular. I'm not sure that COPY is accepted!
When 7day travel card is bought you have to give the first day of the travel.
This is on public transport company's (BKV) website:
"Valid from 00:00 on the indicated starting day until 02:00 on the seventh day following for an unlimited number of trips within the administrative boundaries of Budapest on lines 1-99, 101-299, 900–999, M1, M2, M3, M4, H5, H6, H7, H8, H9, D14 , on designated services of MÁV-START Hungarian State Railways and selected suburban lines of VOLÁN bus companies. It is valid on lines D11 and D12 on workdays only. The travelcard is to be used by one person only as it is personalised and non-transferable. Before use, the name or the number of the general BKK pass ID or student ID or a photo ID (e.g. identity card, passport, card-format driving licence) of the holder is to be provided at the time of purchase as it will be printed onto the card. Upon request of the inspector, please hand over your travelcard along with the matching ID. In case of travelcards issued on thermopaper, the ID number is to be provided at the time of purchase as it will be printed onto the card. Advance purchase is possible. No validation required before travel."
