We did the same itinerary as that expertly reviewed by Mark S a couple of days after him and wholly endorse his review. We came away with wonderful reds from all three establishments plus an amazing toasty/toffee oaked Chardonnay from Jackfall. You’ll need a driver anyway because Hungary has a 0 alcohol limit for drivers and you can’t possibly walk the distances involved - particularly if, like us, you want to wander around the vineyards themselves. So why not engage the excellent and vastly knowledgeable Taste Hungary team (represented on this occasion by Gábor and Endre)?…

The favourite part of the trip was the chance to discover new wineries in an area that we have not previously visited, with a fantastic guide (Gabor) who has both an engaging personality and huge knowledge of the wines we will encounter as well as being a great conduit between us and the vineyard owners. We were to visit 3 different establishments, the first and third were wineries and the second a Resturant owned by a famous wine maker from the area. The first was a wonderful small winery in the countryside called Riczu - hosted by Aggie, the wine makers wife - here Gabor was essential as she only spoke in Hungarian, though she was very easy to follow through the passion that she clearly had for all of her wines and there were many things that we could follow even before Gabor had translated them for us. A selections of wine were presented to us ranging from the: Classic collection, to the Premium collection and then finally the Super-Premium collection (which were medal winning wines from a number of prestigious competitions including the Decanter. The wines at the restaurant were paired with the food beautifully and were a real showcase for their wines, the Gere Kopar was the highlight for me. The final winery was called Jackfall, quite simply we could have stayed there all evening talking about their wines, you could have very easily come away from them with one of everything. As it was we left with 3 wines the headline was the 2007 Grand. None of this would have been made possible without the easy charm and knowledge of Gabor, he interjected with assistance when required was happy to join in the general banter and always felt part of the group. We were really amazed at the range of wines on offer, we went expecting only to find Red wine on offer and were treated to some great whites and Roses, the skill of the wine makers of this region is beyond doubt. A real wine lovers treat, though not for the faint hearted, be prepared to have real sized tastings of all of the wines which for us reached 20!…

Great experience all around. Fun conversation and my wife and I enjoyed learning more about Hungarian wines, cheeses, and other local items. Very casual and just the right amount of wonky information about the wine. Highly recommended!

Great experience with a highly entertaining wine expert. I would recommend this tasting to everyone that has some spare time to kill in Budapest.
