This was a waste of precious time and money ~$ 80/USD. There was very little naration and several times it didn't even match up with what we were seeing. There are little kiosks all over the main city center - hard to miss them. We changed buses twice and waited a long while the first time we changed. The second time was when we went from a redline bus to a green line bus. Don't waste your resources.

I thought that I would get a better rate online but it ended up that instead of paying 4500 hungarian forint I paid 6601 forint. They did not offer to reimburse us the difference but it was a lesson well learned. It was also a hassle because you don't receive a voucher online and I had to prove that I ordered it online when I went to the office by showing it on my iphone. After going through the embarrassement they gave us the vouchers. I received the tour for 48 hours offered online instead of the 24 hours they offered there and we used the time as well. They would have given us the 48 hours even if we would have only paid the basic price as well. The tour was well organized, offering many different languages at the same time. The bus guides were friendly and helpful. The coupons for many attractions came in very handy and saved us a lot of money, the stop off at Margaret Island by boat offered for free was very beautiful but I didn't like the long wait back. Buy the tour when you get to Hungary. The one I took was at the Meridian Hotel, Program Centrum. All in all it was a great way to see all the sites. They offer a tour of Szentendre, Visegrad and one more place with lunch. Well worth every forint for it.

We used the hop on hop off for 2 days in Budapest. It was good value Pay for one day get second included also included is river boat trips and there are 2 trips to choose from on the bus - a yellow line and a red line. It is a timed service which has its good points and its drawbacks - 1) you know when to get to a stop as they have good time keeping but you can also easily have to wait half an hour as they are not wildly frequent it may be different in summer months.

BUT BEWARE they finish to run at 6pm - we needed to catch a metro for 4 stops - our 1st and only time on the metro - after buying your ticket you need to STAMP them in a red or orange box to vallidate the time and date - If you dont or are unaware like us and you get found by a ticket inspector you have to pay on the spot fine of 8000HUF EACH we were even forced to pay for our 12 year old son - it cost us around £75.00 for an innocent mistake of 2 minutes travel - to be honest ruined our whole time there - I would advise anyone not to go to Hungary or budapest at all the way i feel about it - shame as it is a beautiful city and the rest of the people seemed nice.

It was the worst choice we made at Budapest and a waste of money. Not only the bus was too crowded full of people, but also we didn't find anywhere to sit and as a result we couldn't hear the audio guide. We ve been waited for the full of people and no palce to sit bus about half an hour, and even in the entrance the guide never told us that there is no place to sit. There is no reason to choose that as you can move faster, easier and more comfortable with metro, tram and busses all around Budapest and you will wait only for 3-5 minutes for them to arrrive.
Furthermore the boat night cruise that was included in our package was ok, except the fact we couldn't hear in some parts the audio guide due to the loud background music they had put at it.

This is a completely worthless trip and a waste of far too much money. The trip has basically nothing interesting to offer, which can also be seen in the fact that there is basically no one standing or waiting at the majority of their stops. Take a public bus or find other ways.

I packed in a Budapest city visit along with a business trip. The best thing I did was to take to Hop on Hop off tour the day I reached. Gives you a good feel of the city and allows you to plan the next few days based on your interest. If you have time do use both days as you get a 2 day pass and 2 boat rides of an hour each on the Danube for the cost of one. I of course only did half a day though I took the boat ride that began pre sun set and finished in the dark so I got both advantages. A light sweater may be needed post sun down. Not all places are worth alighting for but the castles are a must see. So is the St. Stephen's Basilica (St. Stephen's preserved right hand was an interest for me).
I went back another day to Szechenyi Bath. Most amazing experience. I took the Metro that is really convenient. As I stayed at Le Meridian the metro station was right outside and the train tickets were a available at the hotel desk itself. Fortunately I did not buy the Bath tickets at the hotel because post 7 pm the tickets are discounted. Also if you have the booklet from the city bus ride it has a voucher that gets you an additional HUF 500 discount! Take towels, bath robe ( as its cold when you are not in the water) and slippers.
The icing on the cake was because of a tip from Trip Advisor. I ventured to the Great Market Hall which opens around 9 where I shopped for wonderful souveniours for half the price that it was available on Vaci Street!
This is the first time that the only cab I took was from airport to hotel and back ( you even get a discount on your return journey if you retain the taxi card.) Rest of the trip I walked everywhere. The most picturesque being the walk beside the Danube on the Pest side. I did it early in the morning and even at midnight.
Lots of cafes for coffee in the early evening and drinks later. Do try them. Not forgetting the Hungarian Ghoulash at Citadel restaurant.

My wife and I spent 5 days end July in Budapest, a lovely city. This service was sold to us as flexible, affordable, dependable, blah, blah, blah! My main objection is that we didn't get what we were promised. Buses only go every 30 mins (which you know before you buy). What you don't know is that buses often arrive at the stop already full so you can't get on. Then you have to wait another 30 mins for next bus to arrive. There was one old lady with a walking stick beside us who also had to wait 30 mins more in 33 degrees of heat. It wasn't even that there were only a few people not getting on. One time more than 20 people were refused. Someone needs "supply and demand 101" methinks! They say they'll send one sooner but that never happened in our experience. Buses themselves are quite shabby and the music they play on the ear phones between descriptions of buildings etc reminds me of somber never ending music traditionally heard upon the demise of a great soviet! Drivers could also do with some training, very sharp on brakes thrusting many passengers forward and giving a generally uncomfortable experience. We're from Ireland and generally put up with a lot before complaining, but this was awful, if you're used to getting what you pay for, don't buy this!

I have been on many Hop On Hop Off bus tours in other cities and this was by far the worst! The challenge with Budapest is that it is relatively sprawling, but the sights are really clumped together. So you hit a patch and the bus stops every 5 seconds. I heard more music than facts or tidbits.

To be fair, we went in an off-peak season so using the buses was challenging because they only came every hour. If you hopped off, we just couldn't get in the rhythm of finding the next stop and maximizing our experience.

Lastly, you have to share headphones. They don't have the disposable ones that other companies have. That was pretty gross...I put them on over my hat.

I wouldn't recommend this tour. Use public transport and buy a book. You'll learn more.

This hop on hop off (the red bus company) solved my problems on how to see Budapest in the shortest time. Cost only huf5000 each person (for 2 days). Many attractions, good timetable for the bus (2 routes) and boat cruise, free wifi on the bus.

for 4500 Ft ( about 40 euros for adults) and 4000 FT for students you get to ride this bus which has three lines a red line which is a two hour tour, a yellow line which is a 1 hour tour and a blue line which is a one hour boat tour. The tour is fully guided with headphone set with multiple langagues. You really get to see all of Budapest this way but make sure you give yourself enough time or you may not get a ride back by bus since the last bus ends its run at 5:30pm after my boat tour I was left without a ride back to where I needed to go so I had to use the hungarian metro system which is extremely complicated. The ticket is valid for 24 hours and is the best way to see such a beautiful city like Budapest.

You can buy tickets at the information station at the train or at the hotel hungaria where I picked up the tour which is only a few blocks from the train station.

This is a tour well worth it and truly the only way to see budapest when you have a short time.
