Ladies' trip
Jul 2021 • Friends
I visited the temporary exhibition in Secessionist design with a friend. The atmosphere is breathtaking. The music also helped us to return to this era. I was especially fascinated by the interior design, the furniture. I could approach the exhibits, there were no ropes around them. We just loved the dresses, fans and hats put on display together, the jewellry. The staff was very kind and helpful.

worth a visit

The museum is located in a typical 19th century Budapest palace that remained intact and is open for public. This itself makes the visit worthwhile, but on top of it the collection of furnitures and artifacts from different schools is also fascinating.
Ráth György was the first director of the (currently closed) Museum of Applied Arts. It was his villa and most of the objects are from his personal collections.

An overlooked Art Nouveau gem
Mar 2020 • Solo
Went there on a wet day. Two other visitors, loads of attendants.Crazy. A wonderful collection of artefacts in various media, tapestry glass ceramics metal, from all over Europe and in a sort of domestic setting. No labels but they give you a copy of the catalogue on spec which is all you need. Costs 1000 if you want to keep it.
A most enjoyable morning.

Nice museum, but terrible costumer service
Jan 2020
My mother and I were celebrating her 60th birthday on the 28th of January. We have planned a visit at this beautiful villa in Budapest. She already had seen it, she just wanted to show me, that even Budapest has country house museum, not just London. I was so excited, as I work in a museum too, in the UK.

The receptionist lady, short blond hair, with glasses, - did not say anything when I mentioned that this is my mother's birthday. They organize events also for special occasion's, just like a birthday,- that is the reason why I said it. Her answer was simply, 'you have to order that in advance',- even if I was just joking. Again, she never said 'happy birthday'. But that was fine, she is not a relative.

After we paid, she insisted me to have their guidebook, even if I did not want to buy it, she gave it to me on loan. I said 'thank you very much, I really do not think, I need it, as I just want to enjoy my visit, take some pictures, and if I'm really interested in something, I'll ask someone.' She was literally angry, and she said 'but, nothing has any explanation up there in the museum..' She was so pushy, I had to say yes.

On the first floor, I gave that book immediately to one of her colleagues. I wanted to take pictures, talk to my mother, and that's it. But, anyway, why should I have to explain myself to anyone in this kind of place? I get rid of the book, and I loved the house. Small, but nicely run and it has million artifacts in it. Beautiful, absolutely magnificent.

We came down and I saw the receptionist sitting and watching YouTube at the front desk. When she saw me, she was demeaning her book back from me. I said to her 'your colleague has it on the first floor'. This was too much for her. 'You should have given the guide book back to me!!!' said angrily, and she went up to deal with it. I could not believe it. She put me a very uncomfortable situation. I felt so bad, even if I did not do anything wrong. It was obvious, that she had already problems in her life, who did not ever had a bad day,- but that does not mean that she could leave her professionalism behind. Absolutely terrible person!

As I work in the same environment in London, I know, how hard could be to work in a museum,- or (let's face it) sometimes how boring. But we are always kind and nice to the visitors. There is no way, that I should be this angry or moody to a person. Costumers are not always right, that is fine, - but this sudden reaction was something unexpected, and absolutely unacceptable behavior.

She made our visit, definitely unforgettable! I am a Hungarian citizen too, but after living in the United Kingdom, I forgot how Hungarian staff could be rude in shops, restaurants or museums like this. in London, this would have never happened!

Art Nouveau till you drop

Pretty good museum and collection of Art Nouveau from different countries and movements. The staff was closely following me into each room which can be annoying.

Great collection of Art Nouveau
Jun 2019 • Couples
One hour is all it takes to see the entire collection and enjoy every room of the villa and every unique piece of furniture or decor. A very unique and special museum.

Very impressive for art nouveau fans
Apr 2019 • Family
If you find art Nouveau interesting, you will find here a nice selection of pieces from around the world. There are no guided tours, yet you are offered a book in the front desk that tells the story of the villa and the exhibits. Unlike other sites in Budapest there is an English text inside the museum. Children are welcome but they have to be impressive kids to appreciate the museum so think again if you wish to challenge them.

If you like Art Nouveau, on no account miss this little gem

Have been in Budapest several times over the years and wanted to revisit the Applied Arts Museum which I had gone to on my very first trip. Discovering it was closed for a major overhaul, the curators have moved some of the exhibits to this lovely townhouse and have created a compact exhibition leaning heavily on the Art Nouveau period. There are exhibits not only from Hungary but also from some of the other countries where Art Nouveau had a strong impact - France, Austria, Holland, Scandinavia and even Scotland, my homeland, gets a mention thanks to CRM and The Four. I found the Hungarian exhibits particularly interesting as I didn't realise there was such a big influence of AN here. The lady at the cash desk gave me a very interesting book which gave details of all the exhibits which I bought at the end as a souvenir. Really enjoyed this wee museum, guess the content is right up my street but for anyone with even a passing interest in Art Nouveau it's not the worst place to pass an hour. Bit off the beaten track but for me, definitely worth the effort!

This is an interesting small museum in a home. The collection is extensive with lots to see. If you are 70 the admission is waived and you get a catalog which is very useful. If you like these typesof objects, you can spend an hour very easily.
