We walked up to the Gul Baba's Tomb (Gul Baba Turbeje) and on our way we passed the Mansfeld Peter Park, which is really sad piece of the Hungarian history.
He was the youngest victim of retaliation following the 1956 revolution. Mansfeld was sentenced to death and then executed right after he became officially adult at the age of 18.

This is a rather small, quiet park, with great views over the city. Partially covered by a tree canopy, it's also a great place to sit and reflect.

For me, reflection was more of a 'personal' nature. Péter Mansfeld - had he lived - would have been exactly the same age as I am.

Péter was imprisoned when he was just 16 years old. The Communist Hungarian regime of the day [read: Soviet puppet regime] didn't want to appear too 'harsh' by executing children, so it waited until he turned 18 on March 10, 1959. He was hanged as an 'adult' on March 21, 1959.

(See also TA's Péter Mansfeld Monument listing.)

While Péter was enduring the last couple of years of his life in political prison - called Hell's Hallway - I was worrying about keeping my grades up so as to get into university. While Péter was being hanged, I was worrying about what kind of dress to wear to my high school graduation.

The incongruity of this juxtaposition didn't escape me. I found myself thinking how one young life was extinguished (his) while another young life (mine) was allowed to develop through young adulthood into middle age and then into old age.

Péter never got the chance. His life was snuffed out because his beliefs fell afoul of a Communist dictatorship.

The visitor doesn't have to be the same age as Péter would have been to feel the shivers of injustice; all one has to do is reflect on one's own 18th year by comparison.

I felt overwhelming sadness at such a terrible waste of a young life and the pain he and his family must have endured.

Getting there

This is probably the easiest way of deciding how to get there:

1. Bring up Google.
2. Type in 'Mansfeld Péter Park Budapest directions'.
(Mansfeld NOT Mansfield)
3. Select the icon of your preferred mode of transport (above the map).
4. Tap the Start icon (at the lower right side of the map).
5. Type in a starting point (e.g. Keleti Pályaudvar).

My own route was as follows:

Hopped on tram #19 (on the Buda side of the Danube), got off at the Margit Bridge stop, then just asked a passersby how to get to Margit Boulevard (Margit körút).

Margit Boulevard is a major thoroughfare - can't really miss it. With my back towards the Danube, I headed up the boulevard to where it very soon veered off to the left.

Then simply crossed over the boulevard and went straight ahead past Margit Square (Margit tér) onto Margit Street (Margit utca). Hugged the right side of the street until I hit Apostol utca on the right. It's up a bit of a hill.

Headed up Apostol utca to the top of the hill and Mansfeld Péter Park is on the left - at the intersection of Veronika utca and Apostol utca.

It just takes 5 minutes by walking to get here from Gul Baba's Tomb.
The view is far better form this tiny square than from Gul Baba's Garden...

If you are visiting just for the view of the parliament, this is not worth it as you can get similar to better views of it from the fisherman's bastion or such. There are also other spots in the city for park-like relaxation. This is defintely not a tourist place so if you are after those hidden places you can think of visiting, perhaps at sunset before you visit Margaret Island.
P.S. On the other side, it's a very small spot where houses around get their dogs, kids or beer for some time.
