We walked around here our first night in Budapest and I was particularly interested as this is often written about as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. The scene was cool — rows of booths selling various small craft items or food and drink (lots of “hot wine”) while St. Stephens Basilica is all lit up with Christmas-themed changing light displays. There is a very small skating rink front and center, not in use when were there.
We enjoyed soaking in the festive environment but try as I might I just didn’t find anything I wanted to purchase at any of the booths. Mostly (to me anyway) the wares seemed less handmade than I had hoped. And while the food looked appealing we had a big dinner at a restaurant a couple of blocks away, so we couldn’t really sample anything to eat. However if one was hungry there were sausages, langos (fry bread with toppings) and Kürtőskalács (a specific chimney cake made on a spit), to name a few.

One of the main attractions in Budapest, that you don’t want to miss. Many coffees and restaurants around the square, makes a good relaxing after the visit. The ticket office is on the right side of the Basilica (facing front). For extra charge, people can claim on the top and the view is stunning. Highly recommended.

An evening walk offer a chance to see St Stephen’s Basilica lit up and beautiful by night. We were quite surprised to see how large the square in front of St Stephen’s actually is - when we were here last in 2012 it was covered with an ice rink and lots of Christmas market chalets.
During this visit we got to see the square empty, showing off the centre piece being the Basilica.

This is a large square located right in front of St.Stephen's Basilica. We had visited just after new year and was hoping to still see some of the christmas markets there as most european countries still have the markets in the first week of January, but there wasn't any. That said, it was a nice large relaxing space with lots of restaurants around the area.

City’s vibrant plaza, one of the most popular meeting spots for locals and tourists, lined by numerous high-class restaurants and some bars. The Square is home to numerous events throughout the year, including a magical Advent Fair, and other occasional festivities.
Two fountains stand on the square dedicated to St. Stephen and to his wife Gizella.
The square is flanked by benches and terraced cafes.
A huge winter festival took place and a good Christmas market dominate the square in the advent season. A beautiful Christmas tree decorates the square facing the Basilica. For this occasion, Drink mulled wine, eat some roasted chestnuts or Tasts local food and drinks, However prices are costy at the square.

We walk arround this area every day, the Saint Stephen's Square looks very lovely and its full with caffee shops, restaurants or suvenir shops, all in walking distance.
With Saint Stephen Basilica nearby it a great place to take pictures or just relax and admire the view and arhitecture.

This empty square grand plaza stands in front of magnificent St. Stephens Basilica (which we are all must see in Budapest) is a classic of how Budapest has spiffed up its one-gloomy downtown. A decade ago, this space was an ugly parking lot. Today, the streets around this square transformed into one of Budapest's trendies nightlife zones, with lots of bars, restaurants, and cafes catering to local yuppies.
Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about the Christmas market since we were here in September. But I want to especially note the long central pedestrian street Zrinyi utca running from this square to the Danube River. I don’t know why, but TA did not pay attention at all to this separate topic. Zrinyi utca is full of restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops with prices much better than anywhere else. Also on this street located a beautiful building of Duna Palota ("Danube Palace") - a former casino, and today a venue and ticket office for Hungaria Koncert's popular tourist shows. If you're up for a crowd-pleasing show of either classical or folk music, drop in here to check your options.

This large and rather empty square provides a wonderful photo-op for St. Stephen's basilica.
There are numerous eateries in the square - not necessarily the best, but definitely pricier, due to their premium location.

Great square offers excellent view at the most impressive building in budapest - the basilica. Lovely on the inside. For just 500huf (1,5 ejr) you can climb up to top of the dome and enjoy a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view - much better than budapest eye (imho)

Great central location to meet others. The church dominates the space and the large open area in front allows for photos and to take it in. There are shops and cafes around the edges of the square, Great place to people watch and enjoy the basilica.
